Can anybody explain the purpose of this gizmo...
Was buying some HDMI cables on ebay and ran across this:

http://cgi.ebay.com/HDMI-M-Male-to-F-Female-Cable-Plug-Converter-Adapter_W0QQitemZ140289879925QQihZ004QQcategoryZ149974QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

Does it do something or is this just one of those things that got made because it was -possible-???
:wtf:

Could be a spacer
Some cables may be too thick for proper clearance???

For $8, it's a bit steep. :) :) :)

6. That's my guess...
an extension for an input port that might be recessed, where the cable may not seat properly.

8. You're probably right...although I don't remember ever seeing a recessed one
that a regular cable wouldn't connect to. It just seemed goofy to me when I saw it. :D

2. WOW. Too early in the day for my mind to think around THAT one!
I think it WOULD make a GREAT gift for that person who has everything! I wonder if you can daisy chain them?

Seriously, I just don't get under what circumstances you'd need one.

9. I guess you could buy 50 of them and have a 6 foot non-sagging 'cable'

3. I have one!
I used it to link two 6' HDMI cables together on a projector set up. A very important component if you need another 6' between projector and DVD player.

5. Coiuldn't you have just plugged one into the other? This is M to F.
You would already have a jack end and a plug end to use this.

10. You'd need to have both ends female in order to connect two cables.
With this, it just extends the length of the cable another inch or so. I'm inclined to think that it could be used if you have an HDMI cable with a really unwieldy and large connector, so this just makes it a bit smaller so it could be inserted into a tight place. I've never seen an HDMI cable like that, but they could exist.

11. In testing Radio connectors, we'd call this a "keeper"
For someone testing devices all day long the connector can easily get worn out or broken from constant plugging and unplugging.

It's cheaper (and faster) to just replace the "keeper" at the end of the cable, rather than the whole cable.

13. Well crap I'm embarrassed I didn't think of that...I've used the same principle for years
with other kinds of connectors (even tube sockets back in a different century :D)
yikes
(probably should have been listed under testing devices) ;-)
