Laura Bush: "Fifty million people are free from tyranny..because of my husband's policies"

http://www.usatoday.com/news/nation/2008-12-18-bush_N.htm?loc=interstitialskip

First lady defends Bush's record

WASHINGTON — President Bush may have joked about the shoe-throwing incident in Iraq, but first lady Laura Bush was not amused.

"As a wife, I saw this as an assault, and that's what it was," she told USA TODAY during an interview Thursday at the White House. "And so I didn't laugh it off like he did."

A month before returning to private life, Bush talked about her plans. She said she will continue her public advocacy of women's rights in Afghanistan and democracy for Burma. A self-described "ambassador" for her husband's policies over the past eight years, Bush praised her husband's record in Iraq and Afghanistan. She said she will be an active defender of those actions "because they are worth defending."

"Fifty million people are free from tyranny because of the United States and because of my husband's policies," she said. "These are very, very important, world-changing happenings, and they're for the best."

On Iraq, she said, "Do people really wish Saddam Hussein were still there? I don't think so."

1. Where there even that many people in Iraq before the invasion?
I though it was 25 million. And even so, the population there is no longer anywhere near what it was when we went in. Not that this bothers those people, they got their paychecks.

5. It was 25 million.
Bush has killed 1 million and another 4 million have fled Bushland. It's Repuklican math.

2. Thanks for sharing, Laura
Please make sure you turn the lights off when you leave, and don't let the door hit you in the ass on the way out.

3. Hey, Pickles, why don't you ask those people how THEY feel about what
your drunken psycho husband did "for" them? Just be sure to bring a shoe deflector when you do.

4. I see Pickles has been hitting the spiked
holiday punch. How convenient to forget the death and destruction caused by this criminal cabal. I hope the spirits of dead and maimed Iraqi children haunt her to her dying day.

8. How much longer until we hear from Jenna and Barbara re: daddy's legacy?
Edited on Fri Dec-19-08 01:24 PM by Mike Daniels
Although, given the little we've seen of them lately I think they're as tired of daddy's adventures as the rest of the world is.

Watching the pathetic WH video I got the impression that the girls would have loved to have been anywhere else there there.

16. I noticed that Jenna wasn't anywhere the Olympics
My guess is the two girls will stay on the East Coast and as far from daddy as possible.

I wouldn't expect them to slam him in an interview so their quotes don't surprise me. However, I would be surprised if off the record they honestly think that their father is going to be warmly received anywhere he goes during the rest of his life.

12. Riddle me this, Laura
Then why are those "liberated" people throwing shoes instead of flowers at your husband whenever they get the chance?

Go take another Xanax; in fact, why don't you finish the bottle?

15. They're not free yet
They're simply not being terrorized by Saddam Hussein, at least on the Iraq side.

And in Iraq, women are being forced to dress is more traditional Islamic gard and being forced out of jobs and other rights.

On the Afghani side, the Taliban still holds a lot of territory and people.

The struggle is not over. To think so is fooling yourself.

And let's not forget that if those "50 million people" hadn't been sitting on huge oil and natural gas reserves. Let's not forget that the 24 million people in North Korea, who are far more oppressed and in far more dire straights than Iraqis AND who have nuclear weapons... well, they were totally ignored, weren't they?

19. Strawddam Hussein
No one (at least no one who isn't a Baathist) wishes Hussein were still running the show in Iraq. But to claim that anyone who is against the Bush/Cheney doctrine which ushered in an illegal, immoral, and utterly disastrous war to remove him "wishes" he were still there ignores the terrible damage to international law and innocent Iraqis (and American soldiers) that resulted.

Although she appears oh so nice and sweet, her and her children's legacy is tied to him. She will say whatever is necessary to revise history so Bush isn't remembered as the worst president EVER.
