The Kennedy Admin made me feel proud to be American. The Johnson Admin ....... |
|
..... gave my hope for social justice and anger about an ill conceived war. The Carter Admin started hopeful and ended with great sadness at which could have been but wasn't. The Clinotn Admin made me feel happy, secure, and prosperous.
I am sure each of these made you feel certain ways.
As we watch it forming, how do you think the Obama Admin will make you feel?

1. Taking the long view here, as you are doing and doing well, is a healthy thing. |

Excellent question.
I think the Obama era may return us to what citizenship meant before November of 1963.
From the start, Obama has asked us to believe in our responsibility and privilege in change.
And on a more personal note, for me it means that I won't feel ashamed to be a citizen of this country because I will no longer be represented by such a astonishingly ignorant and arrogant and dismissive man like George W. Bush.

2. I think the problem for me, and perhaps many others... |
|
...is that going into the Obama administration I'm more depressed and ashamed about America than I've ever been in my life. I need real change to improve my mood, I'm afraid, and the view ahead doesn't look nearly progressive enough.
The thing is that when republicans are in office I expect the worst and hope for nothing. When democrats are in office I hope too much and risk the greater disappointment.

Recent senate votes by Obama, such as FISA and his expansion of "Faith based Initiatives ", his coddling of corporate America, and his invitation to a bigot and misogynist to deliver the Inaugural convocation as well as the huge sums demanded as "fees" to attend Inaugural activities leave me with little hope for any significant change. He will be somewhat better than McCain. But then, I had great hopes about Pelosi and Reid in 2006 , so I expect very little.

From watching what is going on I believe my feeling about this new administration will be frustration because I really thought he might try to bring the change he spoke about. Asking a bigot to pray him into office is same old, same old. Obama seems to believe (with this invitation to Warren) that those whose rights are less than equal must "reach" out, once again and forever, to those who perpetrate inequality.

during this very dangerous economic downturn/depression. My feeling about Kennedy, Johnson, Carter and Clinton are very much the same as yours. I am of the mind that no team and no leader would do a better job in straightening things out and protecting us if need be than Obama right now. By protecting us, I do not mean from terrorists (I'm not afraid of terrorists), I mean from banks and credit card companies and other despicable corporate fucks. So I'm feeling relief, yes, relief is the word. And I'm proud to have him as President. What a joy to listen to him talk after 8 years of *.
