Poll question: When Will We See Marriage Equality in America?
If you asked me in October, I would've been more optimistic, but as things stand now...

8. If you think Idaho is going to allow legal same-sex marriage anytime soon, think again.
I said all 50 states.

And yes, it will take 100 years to bring about marriage equality in states like Idaho and Utah.

11. Don't be silly. The US constitution overrules the states.
All you need is one SCOTUS ruling saying that the government has no grounds to prevent gay marriage under the Equal Protection clause.

Ten years, max.

2. That would mean overturning DOMA.
Once that is done, it would be pretty easy.

6. The majority of states have passed laws that ban gay marriage in one form or another.
Edited on Sat Dec-20-08 01:15 PM by IsItJustMe
Most of these laws were passed within the last 8 years. The majority of these laws were passed by overwhelming majorities within each state. That means that many Democrats had to join ranks with the Republicans to pass such laws.

The Republicans have been very successful with this issue. It's gonna be a while.

On edit: I believe that when gay marraige becomes a reality in this country, in all 50 states, it's gonna have to come from the Supreme Court.

7. Maybe this Warren thing will help in that it's inspiring action...
Spoke with my mom this morning, a lifelong mainstream Christian, and she is extremely disappointed in Obama ~ her pastor has been speaking out against fundie hatred. Maybe more mainstream Christians will start speaking out.

17. Call me a crazy optimist
But that's one silver lining I see in the Warren pick. It's getting people who weren't fully into the fight into it, and energizing those who have been fighting for years.

My other hope is that, in the month between now and the inauguration, with all the interviews and investigations into Warren going on, someone will find evidence of him being a necrophiliac or something.

19. I think I'll start spreading rumours
that Warren fucks dead animals. If the 'Whitey' tape lie can gain traction, why can't mine?

10. I voted 15 years
I think that it will be that long before we will have a SCOTUS that will once and for all acknowledge the rights of GLBTs. Until then there will be a lot of progress, but GLBTs will not be fully recognized as having equal rights until SCOTUS upholds the Constitution for all.

12. I would say, fifteen years. Or maybe until we get a progressive majority
in the SCOTUS. Thank Nader for that.

13. When "Marriage" is no longer recognized by government
Edited on Sat Dec-20-08 01:35 PM by alphafemale
They should only recognize "Civil Unions."

A "Marriage" is something that should be granted by your church.

15. I'll predict it'll be firmly established in a few states 10-15 years from now.
I'm sorry, my gay friends. It's not my place to ask for your patience. But I do wish you find some peace with the painful waiting you'll have to endure until we get a small measure of justice in this country.
