It is miserable outside, snowing and will continue so for the whole weekend. Something for the East Coasters to look forward in a few days, so I chuckled at this email and am sharing with DUers.

REMEMBER THIS AT CHRISTMAS TIME
According to the Alaska Department of Fish and Game, while both male and female reindeer grow antlers in the summer each year, male reindeer drop their antlers at the beginning of winter, usually late November to mid-December. Female reindeer retain their antlers till after they give birth in the spring. Therefore, according to EVERY historical rendition depicting Santa's reindeer, EVERY single one of them, from Rudolph to Blitzen, had to be a girl. We should've known... ONLY women would be able to drag a fat-ass man in a red velvet suit all around the world in one night and not get lost .

It is a fact, reindeer experts say, that both the male and female of the species have antlers. It is also a fact that while most cows retain their antlers until spring, most bulls drop their antlers by early December. The key word is most.

The article confirms most females retain their antlers, most males don't. Yet the article says it's possible Santa's reindeer could be male and concludes, "chalk one up for tradition." But I don't recall any explicit tradition re- reindeer gender; and why, merely because it's possible, should we resolve all doubts in favor of maleness!

I distinctly remember at all the reindeer games that Santa's reindeer were the coaches and the young'uns playing the reindeer games were boy reindeer showing off for the girl reindeer. Even when I was a young'un myself (and it debuted the year I was born, 1964) I remember thinking it was sexist. :)
