YOU CAN get rich while everyone around you is going broke with the super tips you’ll find in economist Dr. John Paul Toffleson’s riveting new book: In the Money: Depression Secrets of the Super Wealthy. And the advice couldn’t come at a better time. According to the Toffleson, America is just weeks away from Wall Street crash that will leave as many as 140 million men and women out of work and begging for jobs that might not come back for a decade or longer as bankruptcies soar and businesses struggle to stay afloat with:

- fewer customers,

- tighter credit, and,

- soaring, Jimmy-Carteresque interest rates of 18 to 20 percent.

And that, says the economist, is good news for people who don’t mind getting rich off the misery of others. The longer the downturn lasts, he notes, the more money you can make in a variety of “borderline-legal” and “semi-ethical” but high-paying home businesses like kitchen dentistry, toilet-paper gouging, road-kill take-out, unlicensed beer, wine and whisky sales, amateur protection rackets, backyard burial services and many, many more.

“The scenario isn’t pretty, but make no mistake - it can work to your advantage if you go to work without delay,“ the Washington, D.C.-based expert told me exclusively.

“For starters, you should hoard items that everybody will need after the collapse - items like toilet paper, condoms, knives, guns, bullets, birth control pills, clean water and food. “You also need to prepare yourself psychologically to take advantage of neighbors, family members and friends in the toughest of Fortune 500 traditions. This is not a strategy for ‘people who care about people.’ It’s a strategy for people who care about money - and who want to get rich at any cost. The good news is that you don‘t need a lot of money to make a lot money during a depression. A basic understanding of capitalism - and a willingness to put compassion on the back burner while you extract wealth from desperate people in desperate need - are all it takes to accumulate riches in the worst of times.”

8. "Toilet paper"
Once on an exnded backpacking trip, a buddy of mine made a classic blunder- left his TP behind.

As my supply was "limited" -it became known as "mountain money" and a source of barter for "goods and labor!"

13. still waiting for those "soaring" 18% interest rates!
Edited on Tue Dec-23-08 10:08 PM by pitohui
if we had these interest rates we wouldn't need the rest of it, we'd just yank our savings out of worthless stocks and houses and let it sit in money market funds making us rich -- those "soaring" 18% interest rates were really sweet while they lasted

the reality of this depression is that the interest rate has dropped to almost nothing

if clueless thinks he's going to get rich making bootleg birth control pills in his kitchen, then bless his heart, is all i can say -- you sure can't "hoard" clean water, it weighs too much and takes up too much space, i'm sure the rest of his advice is just as idiotic

toilet paper gouging is funny and gives up the gag for what it is, no one needs toilet paper, how do you gouge people for toilet paper? in a pinch, we do just fine without it, did this fool never go camping or does he just think we never did? no one will be gouged for toilet paper, they'll wipe their ass on catalogs lifted from the recycling bin if need be :-)

22. No free lunch
Interest rates reflect inflation

18% interest rate. Sweet.

16% inflation. Not so sweet.

Your wages go up 14% but bread & milk go up 16% you actually are behind.

Real Wages
Real Buying Power
Real Wealth

always have to be adjusted for inflation.

The really crappy part. Runaway interest/inflation helps the rich.

Eventually it will be brought under control.

The problem is that you only "gain" on the % of your income you are able to not spend.
The rich are able to save a larger portion of their income.
As the money supply is expanding their portion is "expanding faster".
They still come out ahead.

If it is bad: buy inflation protected assets (like Inflation Hedged T-Bills)
If it is worse: buy gold
If it is worst: buy bullets (inflation resistant and they will be useful in the coming food riots).

15. This strategy is what has caused the economic collapse
It is the republican strategy. "This is not a strategy for ‘people who care about people.’ It’s a strategy for people who care about money - and who want to get rich at any cost. "

29. It is a corollary of Poe's law..
Poe's law: Without a winking smiley or other blatant display of humor, it is impossible to create a parody of Fundamentalism that SOMEONE won't mistake for the real thing.

It's basically because we have heard so much incredibly stupid crap spouted in all seriousness, particularly in the last eight years but also going back about thirty years.
