Office of Women Proposed at Cabinet Level

http://www.buzzflash.com/articles/alerts/545

American women and feminists, in particular, sprang to action in support of Hillary Clinton's run for the presidency. Now they are uniting to lobby the incoming president also to mobilize on behalf of women.

Activists and leaders of women's political organizations have called for the Obama Administration to create a cabinet-level "Office on Women." It would address issues of inequality, evaluate programs and policies as they impact women, coordinate policy between federal and local or state agencies, and strengthen outreach to women. The proposal was sent to Obama and Biden December 16. It was signed by Eleanor Smeal (Feminist Majority), Kim Gandy (NOW), Lorraine Cole (YWCA), Lulu Flores (National Women's Political Caucus), and 44 others.

The writers point out that women are severely underrepresented in Congress, with the US ranking 71st among the world's parliaments in representation of women. Therefore, they also urge the incoming administration to increase women's representation dramatically in the executive branch.

there are more women in the US then men - I'm for the Office of Women until we are equal to men.

2. Women were "united" for Hillary. I don't think so....
ER: Women have a variety of views just as broad as those men have.

3. Well what would this office do?
I read the article, but I still have no idea what this office would do or say in terms of policy

And what's to prevent a malicious administration (see: Bush) from turning into a tool against women (see: EPA under Bush)

6. How does one "address issues of inequality" by raising the priorities of one group above others?

13. I am all in favor of equality....pressing probs come first...SURVIVAL
for HUMANITY has got to be Priority

Rising Sea Levels

Ocean Reefs being decimated due to Crown of Thorn Invasions

Corals disappearing

Acidification of sea water

Loss of land due to climate disruptions

Fresh Water Sources dwindling

Food for the masses

Over population

Terrorist prevention

Econ in a Twit

Unemployment rising

Solutions diminishing

Information OverLoad in effect

Education Lagging

Civics missing

Job Creation system program barel in place

etc etc

We are in a time when we need to think long term survival...we have limited resources and time...we need to take steps to avoid the Big Die Back...like in Famine Prevention Dept...

So much work and so many things to do....what can I say???

15. Time is of the essense....already 25% of reefs are impacted...ocean levels forcing many islanders to
evac, fisheries in major decline, top soil shortage soon to impact crops, etc etc

Yes ..I understand women can and should be a part of the solutions...but right now...Obama and Team should be prioritizing the priorities focusing in two directions, fixing the Econ and Saving the Planet...these can be accomplished soon if we focus...

No Time for distractions, tangents, disruptions, side bar stuphs.....

I am not saying Womens Issues are distractive, etc.....very important....but, when compared to Survival of the Human Community...what can we do?

Tie it in somehow and ya got me on board....

:toast:

21. How much would that cost?
No, the real solution is for women everywhere to speak out more. Those women & men out there promoting sexist policies all know at least one feminist. It's time for the feminists to start talking (and no, I'm not talking about trivial/faux outrage issues).
