1. wtf??
how heartless can they be?

case in point... one of my good friends got layed off from HP 3 years ago (outsourced her job to Costa Rica. thank you Carly)and since then she has held a couple of jobs - one for a year and a half, but now she is suffering from health problems due to diabetes. The economy has gotten worse but she is searching every damn day for a job. she has a MBA and lots of experience BUT she is also walking with a cane or walker. She goes in for an interview where she's competing against tens to even a hundred people or so for the same position. Now who do you think the interviewer would hire? Her - with her obvious problems, or some younger, healthier person?

Oh, but she's "Lazy". your co-workers need a quick wake up call.

2. Mental and ethical subordination to the "System" and the Myth of the Meritocracy.
It's not unusual for the fearful and ignorant to rely on superstition and dogma.

4. Myth of the Meritocracy
Exactly right TahitiNut. And then when they DO lose their job - well, THAT'S reverse discrimination, ya know....

It's funny, in a fair fight (equal opportunities growing, up, no discrimination, etc) most the the right wingnuts would be the LAST percentile. Maybe they know this on some gut feel level and rationalize their behavior as some sort of survival tactic...

17. That's it
It's a variation on the Stockholm syndrome.
They identify with their captors (exploiters).
They seem to hold the oligarchs in higher esteem than their own neighbors.

18. Yup.
Much of my career was spent in "the belly of the beast" (global corporations) and I've seen it in spades.

3. Typical republic assholes.
It's called a slowing economy. In 31 years, I was laid off several times by the same company. And it was always done in seniority order.

At least until the last time, when the republicans running the place ran it completely into the ground, and escaped with their golden parachutes.

7. Well, maybe repug workers stay busy kissing the repug boss' ass.
Maybe that's why they are the last to go. But I suspect the premise for that statement is off by a mile. I suspect they get canned as well and then go sulk, claiming a minority took their job.

Yes, stigma is alive and well.... even among "progressives".

10. it is the prime assault on people
Edited on Wed Dec-24-08 03:52 PM by Two Americas
It is the foundation of the right wing "philosophy" to isolate and marginalize people, and stigmatize them. It is the way people are attacked, abused and persecuted - it is the first step, it creates the required context. People can hang as many pretty glittering "liberal" or "progressive" ornaments on that tree of cruelty and indifference as they like, but no real change will can happen so long as the tree of hatred and greed stands tall, front and center in our lives, and so long as we admire it, defend it, and water it.

11. Beautifully put. And yet, we refuse to look at the ways we adopt the RW ways, and marginalize and
isolate each other.

"Let there be peace on earth, and let it begin with me."

13. Its called indoctrination and it starts in elementary school (or before)
Even those of us that didn't fall for it or it didn't stick must certainly realize we are programmed to think just like this.

14. It must make them feel so much better to think that.
They'd probably be scared out of their minds to know that it's usually just dumb luck that's kept them from suffering the same fate.

16. Yes, it's emotional self defense. In bad economy they need to think the laid off deserved it.
