K+R if you support the GLBT community, Gay Marriage, and Equal Rights for all. |
|
I have this crazy theory that every legitimate member of DU unabashedly supports equal rights for the GLBT community and abhors bigotry.
There are a few who are rightfully angry, but under the impression that disagreement with certain attitudes and actions indicates enmity. It is understandable that many people who have been treated as 2nd class citizens or worse will be on constant alert for vilification.
It is Christmas day. Regardless of whether or how we celebrate it, I'd like to take the opportunity to say that regardless of any disagreements I might have, I fully and completely support the GLBT community and Equal Rights without hesitation or reservation.
I think that today especially, it would be more than appropriate to reassure anyone and everyone that may have doubts, that DU is above all a place of goodwill towards the GLBT community.
So no matter what race, religion, sex, orientation, or age you are... if you support Gay Rights, K+R this thread.
Merry Christmas. :hi:

The mere idea that religion should make anyone a second class citizen is gross. It's also a large part of the reason why I believe in God but have no use for organized religion.

Many of the very religious people I know are truly wonderful, caring people. It is not any type of religion, or even a lack thereof that makes anyone better or worse. What it boils down to is how we treat each-other... and not just our immediate family or friends, but all of humanity.

Who would have Christ strung up for his 'radical leftist views' upon his return. Thankfully, there are a fair number of real Christians who've been standing up to injustice. That was more than I would've guessed. So the defenders of the Warren pick are a clear minority. http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=132x8031338

That even those who are optimistic that Obama is acting on a strategy, and defending the pick, are not defending Warren.
In fact I haven't seen anyone actually defend the man, even though defense of his selection has been misconstrued, sometimes deliberately, as defense of the man himself.
That is one of the fundamental misunderstandings in all of this mess.

I said those who "defend the Warren pick." And actually I have seen lots of people defending Warren. He has a false image as a moderate that many people believe is true.

I have seen a few people try to point out that he does 'good works', but I think under closer scrutiny, even most of those folks would agree that Warren is ultimately an ass.

20. Please consider, too, that many GLBTQ views on this are also being misconstrued. |
|
I'm disappointed that Obama chose to elevate Warren in this way but I don't agree with a number of other positions that are being assigned to me by some, including:
1. I don't think that Obama will or should rescind his invitation to Warren. Once the invitation was made it was too late to take it back. You won't see any posts from me insisting that Obama take back the invitation.
2. I haven't "thrown Obama under the bus," I haven't "written him off," I haven't "decided that his presidency is a failure" or anything like that. I have said that I'm not going to defend Obama for a while. I've been defending his candidacy, positions, and decisions non-stop for six months, I've sent him money, I've voted for him twice. I'm glad that he was elected and I'll continue to be glad that he was elected but right now I'm not going to be diving into threads defending his every word and action for a while. Let other folks do that. I'll wait. He doesn't need my money right now for all his inaugural balls. Obama is enjoying enormous popularity and support. I'm sending money to relief organizations that feed the hungry and fight for equal rights in the courts. If this means to some that I've "thrown Obama under the bus," then they are hysterical. That's their problem.
3. I don't think that Obama is a racist, homophobe, or bigot. I've never posted that and I don't believe it. I do note that Obama has - three times now - elevated and honored public figures who are homophobic bigots. I haven't seen Obama elevate and honor racist bigots. It's only homophobic bigots who get this public approval from Obama. That bothers me. No question - it bothers me. I'm watching and waiting to see what it means.
4. I don't think that "gay rights" are the only problem facing the United States. I do, however, think that equal rights for all people should be a foundational value that 100% of progressives should support without question. I believe that a country that is willing to deny rights to a minority group is going to have trouble solving all it's other problems. In fact, I think that all our other problems arise from the willingness of too many Americans to ignore basic human rights.
I can only speak for myself, but I've seen numerous other posts form GLBTQ posters here that say the same thing.
Let's make a deal. I won't paint "all of DU" or "all straight people" with a broad brush if you won't paint "all GLBTQ" with the same brush. Deal?

So I suppose it's a deal.
I recognize how awful this pick was, and the outrage is quite justified. I know that it's only a handful of folks whose anger has gotten the better of them.
I have little doubt that 100% of DU supports equal rights.
I even put it to the test here.
Edit; Duh... same thread.

Keep the faith my friends. Only forty-one years ago, Loving v. Virginia overturned the last of America's miscegenation laws, including the Virginia law against mixed-race marriages which can be traced back to 1691.
Today, the idea that people of mixed "race" (whatever the hell that is anyway) cannot be permitted to marry is widely considered to be absurd. Hopefully, it won't take another forty to fix this awful situation.
(Edit: you know, this is neither the place nor time to be a dick. Forget I said what I just erased.)
I think that in another forty years this past decade will be viewed as a dark and ignorant time. Take solace in that fact, that we who support equality are the visionaries of our time, the bright lights who defiantly shine in spite of the shroud of American foolishness and resistance to change.
And while we're at it, happy birthday, Sir Isaac Newton.

No, the Democratic Party does not support the GLBT community or equal rights for GLBT. No, Democratic Underground does not support the GLBT community or equal rights for GLBT.
If you want proof, look back through threads where the fully enclusive ENDA was withdrawn for consideration by Barney Frank and the Democratic structure. It was re-introduced without the provisions for protections for the T portion of GLBT. Lots of folks on this very board heralded the change, and didn't give a rats ass that the Ts had been "thrown under the bus". After all - the gays are what's important and once we get ours, we'll try to get yours. Sometime. Maybe. Whenever.
I was in the room when Joe Solmonese of Human Rights Campaign promised the attendees of Southern Comfort that HRC would only support a fully inclusive version of ENDA. Sadly, that promised evaporated just like smoke does in the back room where the deals are made.
Unfortunately, nobody really supports GLBT except for the GLBT folks themselves, and even then only to a "I want mine" degree.

I wouldn't dare to be one of the ones who refused to recommend such a bold and controversial position here, of all places. I guess the other 134,195 members of DU must be secret homophobes, who don't support equal rights for the GLBT community.
And everyone else must (gasp) disagree with equality and equal rights "without hesitation or reservation"
You sure showed that nasty old strawman.

85. May American's GLBT's community soon enjoy the rights granted to them in Holland! |

Here's to this, from the country which pioneered in gay marriage! May the Warren's of today soon belong to the past!

168. I think that's one of the things they are most terrified of.... |
|
The so-called 'moral' folks, that is.
They're afraid that after a few years of gay marriage, we'll all see that no one spontaneously combusted and Nazis weren't riding dinosaurs in the street.

...to bestiality and marrying yur brother or sister etc., just ask them why none of that ever happened in Holland. Or Belgium. Or Canada. Or Spain. (Deeply Catholic country, by the way!) Or South-Africa. An third-world nation beat the US to it!

Simple idea, universal among the enlightened: Treat others like you would like to be treated.

It really is that simple. Every adult in the world should live by the rule 'an ye harm none, do as ye will'. But there are those that will find harm where it is not. It is almost always out of some form of insecurity that people decide they must interfere with the rights of others.
Sad, really. One day, I promise that humanity will evolve past such pettiness. It must, for the alternative is oblivion.

It's real simple - if someone's not unequivocally for equality without exception, then that individual is at least tacitly if not actively in favor of maintaining a second, lower class of citizenship and is therefore a piece of shit bigot. Pretty cut and dried, isn't it?

Proudly. (Although I'm not so sure about the "...B..." part. Many DUers I've read still have a problem with bisexuality, claiming it's just a cop-out and a refusal to make a commitment. So, while I certainly support the sub line as you present it, even on DU we have a ways to go.

What peeps do in their bedroom is a personal preference issue to me. And marriage requires commitment and love, not gender conformance. I am hoping this California supreme court will rule that no people can legislate human rights and the right to marriage belongs to all of us.
Thanks for the request.

I am one of those who said that it's probably kind of a good idea for Barack to throw a bone to the fundies, and we should just let the invocation go ahead instead of getting all us-vs-them over it. That doesn't mean I'm not 100% in favor of all rights for gays including marriage.

I've been 'teh guy' who's been suggesting that just because someone may not see prop H8 as the most important issue facing our nation doesn't mean they're a bigot or homophobe.
I started this thread to prove the point that DU supports the GLBT community. (There's a cleverly embedded hint in the OP... you should read it.)
Meanwhile, if a handful of angry people are enough to dissuade you from supporting equal rights, then maybe the issue is you, not them.
