Since the downturn, and in light of global climate issues, I do not drive around

at all, except to work and to the grocery store. Went to nearby community for Christmas dinner with the son's family and grandkids. Driving back, I am astounded by all the closed businesses, and the hopeful "sale" signs in the windows with Christmas decor. It hurts me deeply for the people (good republics, no doubt) trying to keep a business open in this economy. I mean deep pain. Tears. Yesterday I got to thinking about how Obama must feel, that the responsibility is on him to bring us back from the brink. It would be difficult to bear.

I've really changed my habits, too, and as a result, there are parts of NJ I used to see more frequently.

I joined a friend to see Milk yesterday afternoon and was shocked that a long stretch of highway in a prime shopping area in wealthy Morris County was full of closed businesses. Most of them were former car dealerships.

I expect to see many more after the New Year.

And yes, it is very sad. I would hate to be a commercial landlord right now.

I find it helpful to think of it as a transitional time rather than just the end of the road.
