Neighbors of a Chicago firefighter charged with sexually assaulting three young children he frequently looked after described him as a kind man, but a bit of a loner.

Jose Moreno, 48, of the 2500 block of South Millard Avenue in the Little Village neighborhood was charged with three counts of predatory criminal sexual assault of a child. At a bond hearing, prosecutors said the children—a girl, 3, and two boys, 5 and 6—lived in the same building as Moreno at the time of the abuse.

Prosecutors allege Moreno frequently hung the children from wooden pegs on the wall while he molested them. The children observed the assaults on one another, said Assistant State's Atty. Kevin Nolan. Moreno, who owns the building, was a caretaker for the children three or four days a week for three to four hours at a time, Nolan said.

Police executed a search warrant and recovered bags of children's underwear, wooden pegs that matched holes in the wall in Moreno's apartment and photographs of the children in suggestive poses, Nolan said. Also seized were dolls arranged in sexual poses, he said.

If convicted, Moreno would face a mandatory life sentence.
