They almost stopped completely here last year. I was getting maybe one a week. Now I am getting several every day for some reason. And they are the real deal because I have applied for some just to check and see. I applied for three of them and was approved by all three over the phone.

I thought the credit markets were frozen up?

6. If you've got decent credit, you can get credit
We had been concerned about getting a car loan but the Toyota dealer offered us 0% financing on 100% of the value of the car. We almost had to insist that, yes, we DID want to make a downpayment.

I wonder if the phrase "frozen credit markets" really just means they're going back to lending only to people who are likely to pay the loan back.

9. The pendulum swung too far though
Basically break people down into three groups
1) people who should never have been loaned money
2) people who are moderate risk
3) people who are minimal risk

Before the crisis banks were lending to all 3 groups.
Now they are lending to #3.

People who are "average" are the ones who are getting shafted.

7. Perhaps it's because we don't have a land line
but I think we get maybe one a month, if that. We have great credit, and the last one I remember seeing was for a business card, not a personal one (we run a small business). I just throw them in the trash because we only use the AMEX and have 20 or so other ones that just sit in a drawer.

The markets might be tighter, but I just think those people still need to make money somehow.

24. Same here, and no land line too.
Car dealer practically begged me to take the car from him after seeing my credit score. Got him to come down nearly $200/month on my lease by only budging $500 on downpayment.

Still, no one sends me unsolicited CC offers. They do hit up my wife regularly though.

10. I get them all the time.
I save them and then cut up all the mail order catalogs, stuff them in the conveniently provided pre-paid envelopes and mail them back.

Saves the planet and helps the PO.

17. I did that a few years ago, but
I do still get them occasionally.

I wouldn't care so much if our substitute (soon to be full time) mail lady weren't such a fucking ditz.

Four times in the last month she has put mail in our mailbox that belongs to one of the neighbors. I don't know if she's on drugs or just careless or what. Anyway, I'm concerned because if I'm getting someone else's mail, the same thing might be happening with MY mail...going to someone else. If it's preapproved credit card stuff, then (from what I've heard) it's not all that hard for sleazy characters to take advantage of the situation and apply, and get the card sent to a different address.

Which reminds me....might be a good idea to do the annual credit report checking

14. My mail has been magazine offers...I had 5 yesterday.
I've also been receiving calls from a credit card company to lower my rate, but I hang up on them. I think it's Discover.

Every other day, I receive a call from a company that tells me this is my "last chance" to sign up for the warranty on a used car I bought nearly 2 years ago. They are getting angrier with each time I hang up on them.

Then, each month or so, I get a call from a company that wants to sell a lot in one of the resort areas, but I have to pay them $1000 up front for advertising.

19. OMG I'm getting those same calls!
Do you have caller ID?

I do...Googled the numbers and lots of other people are getting similar calls.

My phone package allows me to add certain numbers to a list of numbers that will not be allowed through. They just call again using different numbers.

bastards.

22. Yes, I have Caller ID, but they keep changing numbers.
I also have my name on the Do Not Call list, which stopped a ton of those, but they are back. Maybe we should turn them in. Of course, they change their numbers so much, it would be hard to catch them. Wasn't there a $500 fine if they called after being notified not to call? I could use the $500, too.

25. Ya, and I have the credit score of a crackhead!
Honestly, since my student loans are in major default and I am about to apply for foodstamps this week,
:wtf:

If I COULD get credit, i'd run up the bill and never pay it back,(to be realistic, I'd buy groceries etc and wouldn't be ABLE to pay it off) isn't that what caused the hole we are collectively in right now?

frozen credit my ass, the monster can't help itself...

encouraging me to use my card. I think they've been all over me because I paid it off almost a year ago and haven't used it since.
