Uprising News for Jan. 9, 2009: Greece, Gaza

Just two brief alerts here:

ON THE GREEK RIOTS promises to report on its blog today concerning today’s mass demonstrations planned across Greece today, with an anarchist assemply currently taking place in the Athens Polytechnic. Demonstrations and riots in Greece have continued, more sporadically since Christmas, and this January 9 mobilization has been planned for at least a couple of weeks now. Also, check Twitter for any updates as people post them from Athens.

Also via Twitter, PALESTINE NEWS offers a news feed on events on Gaza, very rapidly updated. Their news feed now appears at the right on this blog, and can be accessed separately here as well.

To better follow reports on Twitter from tweeters located in Gaza, see this comprehensive list from Jillian C. York.

And may I add Oakland to the uprising list! I hope they get a twitter account too because the world uprising is starting. By this summer there will be protests in every country. People are sick and tired of everything. Greed and corruption at the top is protected by militaries and cops. This fight is ON!

6. Thousands gather for rallies in Greek capital

ATHENS, Greece (AP) - Thousands of demonstrators chanting anti-police slogans marched through central Athens Friday in the first potential test of the Greek government's promise to get tough on violence after nationwide riots last month.
Police officers thronged the street before the first demonstrations since a reshuffled Cabinet was sworn in Thursday and conservative
Prime Minister Costas Karamanlis vowed to counter the «catastrophic violence» sparked by the police's fatal shooting of a teenager.
Students and academic staff were guarding buildings at Athens Polytechnic in the center of the city to stop troublemakers from using the campus as a base as they did in December.
Masked youths then stockpiled firebombs on the campus before attacking riot police during near daily clashes. Police are forbidden from entering university buildings by law.
«Once protesters enter campuses, the situation becomes more difficult, because there is the risk of injuries,» the rector, Konstantinos Moutzouris, told The Associated Press. «The main thing is to stop them getting in.
But he said authorities have «more information on the protesters and (are) in a better position to stop them.
Three demonstrations were due to be held Friday that organizers said were to protest education reforms and Israel's attacks in Gaza.
The new deputy interior minister, Christos Markoyiannakis, whose duties include overseeing the police, has promised a «zero tolerance» approach to crime.
The violence in December left hundreds of stores and bank branches across Greece damaged or destroyed and added pressure on Greece's increasingly unpopular conservative government.

Last month's riots also revived fears of a resurgence of violence by shadowy far-left militant groups.
On Monday, a riot policeman was shot and seriously wounded as he stood guard outside the Culture Ministry in central Athens. Authorities matched recovered bullet casings to a weapon used by the domestic militant group Revolutionary Struggle.
The 21-year-old policeman is still hospitalized in critical condition, and underwent more emergency surgery early Friday, doctors said.

7. Global protests condemn Gaza war

More than 50,000 Egyptian have protested in the city of Alexandria against Israel's assault on Gaza, one of many held across the world as the conflict enters its 14th consecutive day.

Demonstrators in Egypt, led by parliamentarians allied to the opposition Muslim Brotherhood, chanted slogans condemning the war and the failure of Arab nations to tackle the crisis.

"Down with Israel, and with it every collaborator," protesters chanted after Friday prayers.

Others shouted: "Gaza excuse us: opening Rafah is not in our hands," referring to the border crossing between the strip and Egypt which Cairo has refused to open despite the deaths of more than 780 Palestinians.

An AFP news agency reporter said riot police had tried to prevent the protest going ahead but gave up because of the number of demonstrators.

In the Jordanian capital Amman, security forces stopped protesters carrying Palestinian and Jordanian flags from marching to the Israeli embassy.

8. Breaking...Riot police clash with protesters in Athens

Athens - Hundreds of demonstrators clashed Friday with police in front of the Greek parliament in central Athens, with protesters hurling firebombs and riot police retaliating with teargas. The clashes came as 5,000 students marched in further anti- government protests in Athens and thousands more across Greece to protest government education reforms and well as Israeli attacks in Gaza.

Rallies by students and teachers also took place in the western port city of Patras and the northern port city of Thessaloniki.

The latest outbreak of violence between demonstrators and police follows riots in December which left hundreds of stores and bank branches across Greece damaged or destroyed. They were triggered by the December 6 killing of a teenager by police.

The unrest has shaken the conservative government, which has a one- seat majority and trails in opinion polls. Conservative Prime Minister Costas Karamanlis reshuffled his cabinet earlier this week and promised a zero tolerance approach to crime.

#38, 15:38 Massive Athens demo ends; people retreat in the university; air gun found by demonstrators; Patras and Thessaloniki demos set to start
16:28 At least 60 detentions so far. Police have surrounded the Law School and Propylea and make mass arrests. Mainstream media report there are around 8,000 police on the streets of Athens with clear orders to make mass arrests.

15:29 The first tear gas cannisters are being shot. The demonstrators are retreating in the university (Propylea).

Today’s demo in Athens was massive, with up to 10,000 taking the streets. The cops had tried to install an atmosphere of terror; they were to be seen literally everywhere. The anarchist block numbered around 2,000. Demonstrators found an air gun wrapped up in a newspaper (!) and handed it to the police - this could have been an attempt for yet another provocation.

An evening demonstration has also been called for 5pm. The demos in Thessaloniki and Patras start at 6; more reports to follow.

10. Egyptian protesters, police clash in Gaza protests

EL ARISH, Egypt, Jan 9 (Reuters) - Egyptian demonstrators pelted police with stones in the Sinai peninsula on Friday when officers tried to break up a protest against Israel's offensive in Gaza, security sources and witnesses said.

Thousands demonstrated in other Egyptian cities after Friday prayers, demanding Egypt open its border with Gaza to help supply food and medicine, but protests were dispersed by police.

Five members of the opposition Muslim Brotherhood were detained when they tried to protest outside downtown Cairo's al-Azhar mosque, a major seat of Sunni learning, security sources who did not give their names told Reuters.

About 1,500 protesters outside the Rafae mosque in the coastal city of El Arish threw stones at police trying to stop the demonstration, injuring three. Police beat demonstrators with batons. Some demanded Egypt expel Israel's ambassador.

Demonstrators in downtown Alexandria, on the Mediterranean coast, shouted slogans against Israel and in support of Hamas.
