1 degree in Motown with a windchill that I don't even want to contemplate..... :scared:

If I didn't have two stacks of files on my desk at work I would call in sick without thinking about it.

:wow:

I'm busting out my scarf and mittens. And my long underwear. It'll be a struggle for survival.

12. We've Had It Too Good Here...
Seemed like most the bad storms went north or south or the cold never quite got this far south. Not this year. At least I'm getting plenty of "exercize".

Right now it's 1 degree here...my son is readying the sled dogs for a dash to Naperville.

Cheers...

14. Just out of curiosity, are the schools closed in Chicago
because of the temperature? I remember in the Detroit area a couple of years ago ,temperatures in that range closed the schools down. They were worried about kids at the bus stops and the reliability of the buses at those temps.

We can sit under a willow tree by a pond filled with water lilies, eat clam chowder, Vermont sage cheddar cheese, knock back some micro brew and listen to the hawks call across the White Mountains.

Temps on a lazy July afternoon: 72F.

21. Right now, in the Atlanta area, it's 24.
Tomorrow, though, it is going into the teens, with highs in the 30s. That's really cold weather for a lot of people. Doesn't bother me. I'm a reincarnated polar bear. I love cold weather. At least, the cold weather we get in North Georgia. I couldn't deal with the minus degrees you in the North have.

30. one more reason I don't live in Fargo
I was staying in Grand Forks a few years ago and I saw a T-shirt that had a large bull's eye printed on its back and then around the outside edge top it said "I've been to the exact middle of nowhere" and on the bottom it said "Grand Forks, ND".

I thought it was funny as hell, and at the same time I very much liked the town and particularly the people, who were just plain uncommonly friendly and nice. Smart too.

I am curious to see who wins out tomorrow. since there is THE testing this week. ELA or whatever that they have been practicing for for weeks. so i assume it is the big testing. i know there are a lot of walkers though, so..... they will just wait til 6am tomorrow morning to decide.

27. LOL and thank you for taking the blame!
Usually the weather forecasters refer to these miserable cold temps as being the result of an "Alberta clipper", not to say it hasn't been ass-freezing cold here too, lol.

31. It was pretty clear from the weather maps last night,
that the Alberta Clipper actually blew out of interior Alaska where it's been bone-numbingly cold. It's mid-20s here now, and feels so warm that I stepped out in my bare feet this morning to pick up the newspaper. :)

I have a 6 mile run today and I can't put it off until tomorrow or later (1/2 marathon this weekend) and there was NO WAY I was doing it at 5AM so I am cutting out of here to put it in at the gym.

It will be colder the rest of the week. I am just going to have to tough it out tomorrow morning (3 miles)

We really could use some more rain right now.
Our rainy season is so short, it only lasts till March.

The fall started off well with 4 inches of rain, but
now we have that damn High Pressure ridge throwing
the jet stream far to the north.

As you know, Alaska had two weeks of very, very cold weather. Now that it's warmed up above freezing suddenly, the roads are a mess here. Take care down there.

http://www.adn.com/news/alaska/anchorage/story/653547.html?pageNum=2&mi_pluck_action=page_nav#Comments_Container

Anchorage has suspended public bus service this morning due to icy roads, and a high-wind warning is in effect.

All Anchorage public schools, the University of Alaska Anchorage and Alaska Pacific University are also closed today because of icy roads.

The city said it will monitor road conditions hourly to determine when to restore People Mover bus service, said Jody Karcz, public transportation director.

AnchorRIDES service has been reduced to essential trips only. Essential trips include trips for dialysis, cancer treatment, essential oxygen and medical supplies, Karcz said.

The Anchorage School District announced that all classes are closed. The administrative facilities are open.

The National Weather Service has issued a freezing rain advisory through 11 a.m., and streets are reported to be very icy throughout the city.

The Weather Service also warned of high winds today. Along higher elevations and through Turnagain Arm, southeast winds of 65 to 85 mph, with gusts of 105 mph, are forecast for this afternoon. Glen Alps recorded a wind gust of 75 mph at 8:30 a.m. today.

Winds over the Anchorage Bowl are expected to increase to 20 to 35 mph this afternoon, with gusts to 45, the Weather Service said.

Meanwhile, a wind warning is in effect for Turnagain Arm and the higher elevations through 6 a.m. Thursday. Winds are expected to increase there through the morning, with gusts up to 86 mph over East Anchorage, including the Hillside. Even stronger winds are expected tonight, with the highest gusts reaching 105 mph, the Weather Service said.

The return of the "Pineapple Express."
