Edited on Wed Jan-14-09 03:38 PM by ColbertWatcher
... he's an ass he claims there would be no place to place the detainees.

What do you suggest should happen to the detainees?

1. Here's an idea: why don't we TRY them?
You know, send them to jail if their guilty, send them home if they're not...

4. I don't know if we can
Given how they were apprehended and how evidence against them was gathered. But that was sort of the point to the military tribunals, so maybe we can.

5. Send them home
The powers that be refuse to give them a fair trial, which means they have absolutely nothing on them.

Too bad Afia Siddiqui will never get her son back, even if she is miraculously released.

6. I think there should be some kind of trial ...
... at least to document what happened to them while they were in our (I hate saying that) custody.

9. To what end?
"We're sorry you aren't the terrorist we thought you were, but we'll release you when we get around to it."

12. There must be a record of what happened.
The GOP is not doing what they're doing for the short term; they're doing this to create their "permanent majority."

With documentation of what the GOP did to innocent people, we can have something to show later generations that the GOP is not what they claim to be.

By closing Gitmo, we can show the rest of the world that we--the United States--are not what the GOP is.

13. I understand the sentiment
But we have documented that Bush blocked the efforts of the FBI and others to prevent 9/11, Lied to us and the UN to illegally invade a country, Spied on us and every other nation of the world, tortured people and funneled treasury funds to his friends.

Frankly, there is no will to stop the Republicans. If we're really different than them, we need to free these people, not send them to show trials such as the one Siddiqui is currently going through.

This isn't about our needs- this is about people who have been locked away without charge and tortured.

The madness needs to stop.

15. A trial--A REAL TRIAL--is not for our needs, it's for the accused.
During the trial, they can be given the opportunity to describe what happened to them.

Now that I think about it, that's for everyone.

16. Tell that to Siddiqui
US officials insisted that they had no knowledge of her whereabouts until she was arrested by Afghan police for acting suspiciously outside the governor’s compound in the central Afghan province of Ghazni on July 17. They said that Ms Siddiqui was with a teenage boy at the time.

Prosecutors said that numerous documents were found in her handbag about “the creation of explosives, chemical weapons and other weapons”. Ms Siddiqui is also alleged to have had descriptions of landmarks in the US, documents about US military assets and excerpts from The Anarchist Arsenal.

Two FBI agents escorted by US soldiers interrogated her the following day. The soldiers were unaware that she was being held behind a curtain and a warrant officer put his M4 rifle on the ground.

Ms Siddiqui allegedly grabbed the rifle and fired two shots at a US army captain but an interpreter pushed the gun away as she fired. As the soldiers returned fire, she was hit at least once.

These people have no chance of a fair trial- the Gov't MUST prove that these people are deadly, even though they've been locked up for years and in many cases were not even the correct people to begin with.

Siddiqui's son was tortured to death while she was held, yet the US claims that they never held her and had no previous interest in her.

If tried, these people will not get truth or justice- they will be smeared and unable to go home.

And I hope the trials are televised.

19. These military tribunals were a stretch and a half already
If there isn't enough to try these people even under those loose standards then we have to repatriate them.
