George Carlin always viewed that as somewhat of a cheery exhortation!

It is fairly easy to feel pity for the person trying to hurt you with their words. Surely their pain is greater than anything they could impose on you.

Be kinder than necessary, for everyone you meet is fighting some kind of battle. - Author Unknown
I can't promise I always adhere to this thought, though I do wholeheartedly subscribe to the notion.

11. A friend "taught" me that lesson decades ago |
|
Edited on Wed Jan-14-09 05:38 PM by SoCalDem
A 50-ish woman I worked with when I was just a newlywed 21 yr old.
Her office was just down the hall from mine, and one morning there was a big commoniton and shrieking coming from her office.. We all ran down there to see what was going on..
There was Helen, sitting on the floor, white as a ghost, crying & wailing her heart out, her office-mates hugging her & crying with her.
Why?
That morning she and her husband had a huge argument over taking the car in for new tires.. she was busy, so was he.. The argument escalated and as he left for work, she said "Why don't you just drop dead"..
At 11 that morning, his boss called to tell her that he had been electrocuted at work..(He was an electrician for the power company)..
She kept saying, over and over.. "I can't believe that was the last thing I said to him"...
No amount of telling her he knew she didn't "mean" it, helped her..
As mad as I ever get, I NEVER let anyone leave on an angry note.. you just never know...

21. We moved away a few months later, and lost touch, but |
|
I reminded my sons of that when they told me "I hate you".. I did notice that they usually apologized after telling me they hated me, and we always hugged whenever they left :)
One of the nicest things they said to us was at our youngest's wedding.. They thanked us for being good parents and for not fighting and arguing:)

Thanks for posting that. I put it in my quotes folder. Whenever I come across bits of wisdom like that I save them and every now and then I'll open that folder. A little like someone else might open a Bible.

This particular one was the last I entered, and it resounded with me so much, I printed it on green paper (my favorite color) in a nice font. Even my boss has grinned at it.
