For those with dogs: Beware of toys that create suction
Beware of toys that create suction

Many of you dog lovers out there have probably received at least one copy of a sad story about a 10-year-old Lab mix named Chai (I've received six since Christmas).

According to the story, Chai was chewing on a toy called the Pimple Ball With Bell, made by Four Paws Inc., and his tongue got sucked into it. Ultimately, the tongue had to be amputated.

Snopes.com, a Web site that verifies or debunks urban myths and rumors, says the story is true, and provides more details about it. Snopes reports that the toy has since been recalled and redesigned, and if you own one of the old versions, Four Paws will arrange for a refund or replacement.

This tragedy occurred for two reasons. First, the ball was made of thick, heavy-gauge rubber, no doubt to increase the toy's life span. Second, there was not an additional hole in the ball. As a result, compressing the ball, and then allowing it to expand, created a powerful suction force. Apply this force to soft, moist tissue, and you have a recipe for disaster.

1. So remember:
Don't let Fido play with your penile vacuum pump.

This has been a public service announcement. You'll thank me for this important advice, some day.

4. How forward thinking!
I am sure they will be distributed to the disadvantaged, orphanages, nursing homes, veterans groups and social service orgs throughout the country to combat the scourge of The Tiny Rig, throughout the nation's disadvantaged and challenged.

Now that's The Audacity of Hope!

3. Dogs, hell, that happened to MY tongue when I was a kid!
Squeezed a big rubber hollow ball that had a hole in it, stuck to my tongue under vacuum.

I also made the mistake of licking the metal INSIDE of a cold refrigerator-freezer section.

Before there were no-frost refrigerators.

That I still have a tongue after these traumatic experiences is a miracle.

Yes, we have to care for our furry friends, but our kids, too!
