What I did today in honor of the Inauguration.............. |
|
There is a small Federal Cemetery near me that began as a place to bury Union soldiers who died in the prison nearby. Part of the cemetery is still in use.
There are several long grass covered mounds. These are over trenches that were dug for mass burials. The number of soldiers in each trench is listed on a plaque at the end. Further away are single graves with headstones for Union officers. They are from everywhere: New York, Pennsylvania, Maine, Massachusetts, New Jersey.........
All of these soldiers are buried further from home than casualties of Vietnam,Iraq, and other places.
I went early just after dawn. I put a small American flag at each trench and on each grave. I also put some rosemary for remembrance. I wish I could have played Taps and had a 21 gun salute. They at least deserved that today. :patriot:
