As Bush exits office, portraits come down
Source: San Francisco Chronicle

On Friday, as the wax Bush whirled around every minute and 15 seconds, passers-by had other fates in mind.

"Crush it," said 47-year-old Indiana Mercado of Stockton.

The Chamber of Horrors, suggested someone else.

"I think they should ship him off to Texas," said Miguel Delgado, 27, of Grand Junction, Colo.

Modesto resident Toni Lopez, 44, said, "I don't think they should get rid of him. You've got to keep the old somewhere."

Sean Smith, 24, of San Jose, agreed. Even Adolf Hitler could be found in the museum, he said.

"Melt him down and make candles for places in Iraq without power," said Chris Adams, 26, visiting from Connecticut.

1. Flashback to May 3, 2003
On May 3, 2003,

The Old Man of the Mountains, also known as the Great Stone Face or the Profile, collapsed.

Some believe this is the day America lost face with the world...

On that very day, President Bush held a conference:

Remarks by President Bush and Prime Minister Howard of Australia
The Bush Ranch
Crawford, Texas

...

Q Sir, in honor of your guest, I'll ask it in Australian, if that's all right. (Laughter.) Is there a possibility that you may never find weapons of mass destruction in Iraq? And how would that square with your rationale for going to war?

THE PRESIDENT: Yes -- the question is about weapons of mass destruction. Saddam Hussein had weapons of mass destruction. The United States -- United Nations Security Council voted 1441, which made the declaration it had weapons of mass destruction. It's well-known it had weapons of mass destruction. And we've also got to recognize that he spent 14 years hiding weapons of mass destruction. I mean, he spent an entire decade making sure that inspectors would never find them. Iraq's the size of the state of California. It's got tunnels, caves, all kinds of complexes. We'll find them. And it's just going to be a matter of time to do so.

...

Q Sir, you guys now have in custody 18 of the 55 most wanted --

PRESIDENT BUSH: Yes.

Q -- including several senior members, Tariq Aziz and others. What are you learning about where Saddam might be --

PRESIDENT BUSH: Right.

Q -- what his status is, or also about weapons?

PRESIDENT BUSH: The question is about -- we've captured 18 of the 55, I think you said. And we're still looking for Baghdad Bob, I want you to know. (Laughter.) Anyway -- what are we learning? Well, we're learning that, for example, that Tariq Aziz still doesn't know how to tell the truth. He didn't know how to tell the truth when he was in office. He doesn't know to tell the truth when he's been -- as a captive.

because people would spit on Bush," Huber said. "Once someone threw black paint on him."

7. I get to change the portraits
I get to personally change the portraits at my federal job. Did it in '01 and I've been waiting 8 long years to change it. It was surreal in '01 when I put Bush's photo up because I saw his Daddy's photo come down and Clinton's photo go up when I was in bootcamp in '93 ... that was a great day and a highlight to an otherwise very cold basic training @ Great Lakes. Putting W's photo up and replacing Clinton's seemed like something right out of Back to the Future 2 w/ the alternate 1985 that had to be set straight again. At 11 a.m. CST the timeline gets set back and this national nightmare will be over. There won't be a photo of Bush slowly fading away, but there be ME taking his portrait down from our chian of command board and putting up the photo of Barack Obama. It will happen in silence, I will be by myself, but it will be emotional as I recall the cold dark night a little over a year ago here in Iowa, in Davenport, at precinct 23 where I was the chair and was a part of a movement w/ my neighbors and our community ... we were a grand part of something very wonderful. After I put up the portrait of the 44th president, there won't be applause... only an empty hallway and fellow federal employees working away at their desks. However, my heart will be full as our nation takes it's first steps towards sweeping the last 8 years under the carpet and getting back to where the timeline scewed so many years ago.

8. Beautiful post.
Your post is lovely, and almost gave me goosebumps. Thanks for all you did to get us to this day. Iowa was crucial. It's nice to know that the person changing out the portrait will be able recognize the honor in doing so. I think that the world must be holding it's breath in anticipation of tomorrow.
