How many people are there and it sounded like hardly anyone was applauding? - Given the crowd noise you could hear when other people appeared on the stage, it was most gratifying.
I thought his prayer really sucked - just not my kind of religion and it seemed way too long. The line about commiting the Obamas to God "loving care" sounded like something you'd hear at a funeral.
Not much noise when he finished either - especially when ARetha is introduced right after him and you could hear real noise (by, my God, her hat is awful)

Everyone knocks the Queen's hats. Just ask Queen Elizabeth. And when someone knocks their hats, they both sing the same tune. "R-E-S-P-E-C-T, find out what it means to me..." Means you don't get invited to dinner!

Showed real understanding for the theatricality of the venue. It had presence from far away... none of us watching on television really get that effect, but if you were there,I'm sure that the effect was exactly right. She looked like Mama Rose. Quite a good choice actually. In a way she stole the show. It's one of the only things besides the politics and pomp of the event that people are talking about.

It was outrageous! My co-worker sitting next to me during lunch (work had all 3 TVs in the cafeteria tuned to CNN) couldn't believe the hat.
As for the Rick Warren, with is views he should not have been there. Too long, and it didn't sound like he was including everyone.

|
Catholics don't say the "Our Father" with the last line about "For thyne blah, blah blah." So much for a unifying theme! And, Jews and Muslims and all the other non-Prostestant Americans say that prayer either. Why are these TV evangelist seemingly all so bloated? When God talks to them might he/she not suggest a little restraint at the dinner table and a bit more exercise?

Just in case you missed it, some did because they were in shock by that point realizing the "Sermon on the Mount" was coming, Jesus is no longer pronounced "Jee-zus." It is pronounced "Hay-soos."
So maybe he's running low on donations and thought if he spoke a little Spanish the Hispanics would send him a check.

187. I think Obama was relieved when Saddleback Boy finished up |
|
Warren was clearly milking it. It even looked like he put in three or four false endings, where everybody was expecting him to get to the "amen", but he didn't. Warren's attitude seemed to be "I got the mike, you assholes can't stop me". The reaction shots of Obama clearly seemed to show him thinking "wrap it up, lardass". If it had gone on another minute, I wonder if the Marine Band would've started in with the Oscar night "shut up, you've talked too long" theme.
Anyway, that part is done. We can move on from it.

we need to really fight to get religion out of our government. why do we need any prayers on this day? why do we have religious people giving speeches before sessions of congress? why do have to pay to have religious stations included in our cable/satellite service? try and not pay for them when you do not want them and you have no service. who said this country does not have a government sponsored/endorsed religion.??

what a joke that man is. to pretend to be up there being joyful for equal rights. what a pompous asshole.
the second person who spoke tho, thats a man of God. humble before the lord and asking for forgiveness.
unlike warren who seems to think hes Gods right hand man just under jesus.

168. I got a deep sense of insincerity |
|
But I often get this when I hear the words of mega church and TV evangelists. I feel they are like Bush, they play a Christian on TV. I see no difference in their behavior-morality and that of a non-believer. No, I do see a difference. They are less honest and more greedy, in general. Sorry, if you are offended but that is my impression.

190. "no difference in their behavior-morality and that of a non-believer" |
|
Frankly, as a nonbeliever I'm a little offended by the suggestion that we are as immoral and dishonest as TV evangelists. I don't tell people to deny gays their rights. I'm not opposing medical research that will help real people. I'm not telling Africans not to use contraceptives. I'm not trying to turn all women into nothing more that baby machines. I'm not complicit in the systematic rape of children. I'm also not teaching children that anyone who disagrees with me is damned for all time. As far as the morality of belief goes generally, skeptics did not burn witches, torture and murder heretics, defend racism, burn books or conspire with the Nazis.
As a skeptic, I am perfectly willing to accept you as a good and moral person, but apparently my disagreement on the issue of god does not allow you to reciprocate.

Acknowledging that evil people are evil is not being nasty or hateful. Justifiable anger does not make someone nasty or hateful. Warren is a hate-monger and a con artist. As happy as I am with the President so far, a snake-oil salesman like Warren had no business at a presidential inauguration.

that a lot of people see this differently. I was watching his speech online on the BBC feed and the commentators there were saying how this effectively makes Warren "America's chaplain."
Unfortunately, I'm pretty sure that's how Warren -- and quite possibly the MSM -- will see it. I have a feeling that anytime there is a religious question, America's Chaplain will have his bloated face on the TV pontificating -- just as Blackjack Bill Bennett is considered the final voice on ethics -- (despite getting his ass spanked by his dominatrix-for-hire in his Las Vegas hotel room).

I watched the inauguration in a very large pub. Whenever Obama came on the screen, people cheered. When the Chimp came on, they booed and hissed. Someone also threw a shoe.
When Obama spoke, you could have heard a pin drop.
But before that, when Warren came on, he was soundly booed. Someone shouted, "Hater!"
Everyone talked through his hypocritical little prayer. The Dubliners at my table noticed that Obama clenched his teeth until you could see the muscles in his jaw. It was also great to notice that Obama's daughter didn't even pretend to listen or pray. Sensible girl. I was proud of her.

145. it's over, done with . . . so can we just resolve never to mention his name again . . . |
|
on this site? . . .
whatever you thought of the invocation, Rev. Lowry's benediction put him under the table . . . the contrast was striking -- kinda like when they did that Five Divas show a few years back, and Celine Dione and Mariah Carey were trying to outdo Aretha onstage . . . can't be done, and all they did was embarass themselves . . . which is pretty much what happened today . . .
from this day forth, the invocator is "he whose name shall never be uttered" . . . or typed . . . or otherwise acknowledged . . .
problem solved . . .

I've read more inspiring things on the backs of cereal boxes than that lame invocation.

I was not impressed and the 1000s who stood near me on the Mall didn't either.

i am sick of religion and government. i especially thought his exclusive christan prayer was divisive. he should have never been chosen. i do not want a praying government....i want a secular goverment that promotes secular polices.

172. What surprised me about Warren, |
|
was what a lousy speaker he is. But come to think of it, these white fundamentalist types always are. It beats me how they attract so many followers. One would expect them to be these charismatic figures, to cover their lack of intellectual and moral content. But no, they aren't even that. Weird.

178. I don't know if anybody else thinks about it this way... |
|
but it seems to me Obama may have set the Rickster up with this. Basically, Obama told him "Hey, 'America's Pastor,' here's your shot. Get your fat ass up there and show us what ya got!" And then he got owned by Lowery. Don't know if that was the plan, but it would be cool if it was...

185. And a word to those that said it'd be just a short prayer, Boy you were so wrong. |
|
It was a religious speech that had no business there. I think a religious speech at the inauguration violates the separation of church and state required by the Constitution.

186. Had to watch him twice |
|
I saw him during the live inauguration on TV and again at a local inaugural bash where they replayed the whole thing. Interesting however, is the fact while everyone in the room would applaud most everyone who appeared, Warren got nothing. In contrast, I appreciated Obama's mention of Muslims, nonbelievers, etc. (I'm a Christian myself).

189. I was actually somewhat pleased with what he said... |
|
I am not giving him a pass for being such a jerk, and I had my shoe off ready to throw at the tv screen, but I listened and then my shoe dropped.
I heard some humility in his prayer, and the dude obviously doesn't know how to pray. Idiot. But the things he apologized and asked for were at least an attempt. Maybe I was just caught up in the hopes for the day, but I was a lot less disappointed with him than I expected to be.
I did note that only 5 people clapped, and that many refused to let this charlatan lead them in praying. I appreciated how the cameras documented this. There were many more eyes open than closed, and those that were shut, like Obama's seemed to be almost for another prayer, something like, please god, forgive us for sitting here pretending to listen to this narcissistic shell of a man.
All of it was on view. Maybe that was what I was grateful for. Slime-ily, he did covertly cover the issues in his fake prayer, never saying, and yes, god created gays and therefore they are also perfect, outright, but he did really imply that. I guess that's why my soul found no fault with the words. Maybe Obama's staff wrote them.
I was not nearly as disturbed as I was prepared to be.

200. I actually found Lawry’s prayer to be far more offensive than |
|
Warren's. I wonder if Obama knew ahead of time what Lawry was going to say. I was very disappointed that such hate was shown at the inauguration. I pray that it isn't a sign of what is to come.
