Senate confirms 6 cabinet secretaries, puts off vote on Clinton

The Senate on Tuesday swiftly approved six members of President Barack Obama's Cabinet, but put off for a day the vote on his choice to be secretary of state, Hillary Clinton.

The Senate confirmed all six with a single voice vote a little more than three hours after Obama took the oath of office to become the 44th president.

But Democratic hopes to add Clinton to that list were sidetracked when one senator, Republican John Cornyn of Texas, objected to the unanimous vote.

Cornyn said he still had concerns about foreign donations to the foundation headed by Clinton's husband, former President Bill Clinton.

Those confirmed were Steven Chu to be energy secretary, Arne Duncan at education, Janet Napolitano for homeland security, Eric Shinseki to head veterans affairs, Ken Salazar for interior and Tom Vilsack to lead the department of agriculture.

The Senate also approved Peter Orszag, recently the director of the Congressional Budget Office, to head the White House's Office of Management and Budget.

Obama signed nominating papers for his Cabinet choices about an hour after he took the oath.

6. It's All About The Benjamins
Box Turtle Cornyn is the new head of the RSCC...who not only did little to support the GOOP Senate candidates last year (hell, the '06 RSCC Chairman, Dole, lost her seat) but the coffers are all but dry. Nothing gets repugnicans to write checks faster than a good Clinton bashing. Cornyn is probably sending out letters right now pretending what a "hero" he is...just send in the $500 or $1,000.

7. After what they did to Bill and Hill, they should be terrified.
Don't know how her position as SOS would threaten them (other than repudiating every facet of *'s foreign policy), but they can't be happy.

There is a lot of old-guard (D) animosity as well, but I don't recall a time when our reputation was better abroad than the Clinton years.

8. There will be a full vote by the Senate where all will be approved overwhelmingly.
All Cornyn did was make a slight delay.

9. Was listening to Ed Schultz this morning
and his sub Norm Goldman said Hillary and Cornyn got into a shouting match just prior to the inaugural. Sure would liked to have heard that, hope someone reports on it.
