What is the root of the bad blood between Carter - Clinton
Backstage Carter came in and said a warm hello to GHWB, then walked by Clinton without even acknowledging his existence. I heard there was some bad blood at the time of the Oval Office photo op, but I didn't realize it was as bad as that scene seemed to indicate.

Anyone know the backstory?

2. I was wondering the same thing. First I heard of a rift between them
was pundits jibbering on during the 5 President luncheon.

4. Clinton blames Carter for costing him the governership back in 1980...
Edited on Tue Jan-20-09 07:54 PM by cynatnite
Both men lost that year. It had something to do with putting prisoners or something in Arkansas. I can't remember the exact specifics.

on edit: This was the first. There is more to the history between them. They don't like each other from what I've read.

13. That is what this article mentions. Also says Carter denied snubbing the Clintons.

15. I think they'd both deny any bad blood...
but it's there, IMO.

6. Rumor has it that it involves Carters position on the Israel-Palestine issue.
Although there's so much bullshit on that issue it could be nonsense.

to the late 1970s. Tensions seem to have become more pronounced again recently.

9. Allegedly
it started back in 1980 when Carter lost to Reagan. Clinton supposedly believed Carter's loss cost him the Arkansas governorship. Then in the 90's Clinton was said to have been incensed by Carter's "freelance diplomacy".

I've heard these same stories over and over and don't know if they're true, but here's one link that discusses them: http://blogs.abcnews.com/politicalradar/2009/01/carter-snubs-cl.html

One thing I know is true is that Carter repeatedly criticized Clinton during the Monica Lewinsky debacle.

It involves Cuban detainees who escaped from a brig in Arkansas.
Basically, it cost then-Governor Clinton his job back in 1980. He won his seat back in 82, but the bad blood stemmed from that. Clinton's bio goes into some detail on it.

10. It has something to do with Cyndi Lauper and Randy "Macho Man" Savage.
I think Clinton and Carter met each other in Wrestlemania and Carter blames Clinton for hitting him with a chair.

11. Carter had lust in his heart, but Clinton let it out of his pants.
I think he's morally and ethically offended that Clinton screwed up in such a tacky way. The least he could've done is screw a hot chick.

12. Okay, I checked Clinton's book...
It was over putting Cuban refugees in Arkansas. Clinton told Carter at the time he didn't want them there and that it would cost him the election. It did and both men lost that year. My guess is that the emnity grew from there over comments each made in the press, but it all traces back to 1980.

14. You know, as much as I love Jimmy Carter he seems to be overly fond of the
Southern cut-you-dead snub. He did the same thing to * at Coretta Scott King's funeral (which I applauded for the guts it took, and well-deserved). On that occasion, I felt it was not inappropriate since it was an utter travesty that * seemed to be presiding over the dignitaries, all splayed out in his typical "I'm bored" fashion. But it seems like once a year should suffice and he's had plenty of chances to get his shots in on the Big Dawg. Why ruin today for everyone, making it all about him--just be the bigger person. Greeting someone's wife and then cutting her husband right in front of her mocks them both. Just wrong.

It may have been a poor camera angle , but when GHW Bush was walking past his former veep, he did not slow ,made no eye contact, acted like maybe he didnt recognize Quayle.
Bush the elder looked pretty feeble.

Anybody really think Cheney hurt his back?

found out about some of the things that Bush said off the record about him during the 1992 election, when republicans (including Gerald Ford) were advising him to drop Danny.

He wasn't getting around well, but he did sure seem happy to be around people. Made me wonder if he's overly isolated.

26. My tinfoil hat theory is that he has been wheelchair bound for a while
He has been MIA for quite a while. For months, really...now he pretty much HAD to make an extended public appearance today so they make up some bullshit about him hurting his back while moving boxes (yeah, right, himself)...I'm thinking it's worsening cardiac problems and he can't get around like he used to.
