Jenna & Barbara Bush Give Advice to Sasha & Malia
Before anyone wants to jump on them for this I think this is sweet.

http://www.people.com/people/article/0,,20253747,00.html?xid=rss-topheadlines

In keeping with tradition, President Bush left President Barack Obama a note in the White House – and now his daughters have offered their own advice, in the form of an open letter, to Sasha, 7, and Malia Obama, 10.

From that point of view, the women offer the new first daughters tips what to expect as they prepare for their new lives in Washington, D.C. Here is some of their advice:

• "Surround yourself with loyal friends. They'll protect and calm you and join in on some of the fun, and appreciate the history."

• "Slide down the banister of the solarium, go to T-ball games, have swimming parties, and play Sardines on the White House lawn. Have fun and enjoy your childhood in such a magical place to live and play."

• "Go to anything and everything you possibly can: the Kennedy Center for theater, State Dinners, Christmas parties (the White House staff party is our favorite!), museum openings, arrival ceremonies, and walks around the monuments. Just go. Four years goes by so fast, so absorb it all, enjoy it all!"

"Here is our most important piece of advice," they write. "Remember who your dad really is."

Read the entire letter – including the Bush daughter's thoughts about pets and where to go when they need a hug – here.

8. You may be expecting way too much for it not to get jumped on here at DU
where anything and everything that has to do with Republicans, especially anything Bush, is held up to ridicule. That is one of the worst qualities of DU, the inability to see anything good in anyone who does not agree with them and to question their motives on everything. There are far too many people here who behave that way.

Somehow I would expect that since Presidents' children are brought up in an atmosphere of politics and public service they would be brought up to behave. Did your parents think it was OK like Laura and George did?

thankfully without the public microscope on me.

Regardless, perhaps they could have behaved better, but they were girls who are not guilty of their parents sins. And there are plenty of Democrats sons and daughters who behave badly too. Research Al Gore's son. You think if he became president, his son would have avoided drug abuse? (It wasn't just marijuana... when he was arrested, he was in possession of controlled narcotics, too.)

So, no, I don't feel comfortable throwing stones at the Bush girls because they are not responsible for their parents actions, I didn't behave so completely differently then they did when I was in college, and there are plenty of Democratic politicians children who behave the same way. It's hypocritical for us to condemn them for their silly and stupid drunken antics.

If they had left this note privately, it would have been a sweet gesture. But in the full WSJ article the last paragraph is a puff piece for Bush and the whole thing reads like Peggy Noonan's overwrought prose. I also don't recall either one of them taking in any culture in DC, such as the Kennedy Center or museums. This whole thing looks like a ghostwritten Legacy PR release.

37. One of the reasons I like living in DC is because everyone has long political memories
My office shut down to watch the festivities and we started talking about Carter when he came on screen and then when the kids were shown, we started talking about how badly the Carters handled Amy's life in the White House.

It seems like Clintons, Bushes, and hopefully Obamas have all learned from that example and seem to have found the right balance for separating the private from the public.

Jenna & Tonic haven't done anything particularly offensive themselves, that I'm aware of.

But because Prescott Bush funded Hitler and made money from concentration camp slave labor, Poppy Bush sold heroin and cocaine, and Chimpy benefitted from several big money swindles, AND because their 60 year domination of the Repuke party has ensured that their ill gotten wealth will continue to perpetuate itself, because they have eliminated the estate tax.....

Those two will never have to work one day in their lives. And that's just fucking wrong.

Doing one sweet thing is most unimpressive when one balances out their behavior which is that most of what they do is pure self-indulgence, cloaked in crass bad manners. When I think of Jenna I see her sticking her tongue out at us. Just like her father flipping us the bird. Aww shucks! What a sweet family! Yet there are those here who want to defend the Bushes in spite of their well documented history.

Jenna Bush works as a teacher and has worked for UNICEF

Before leaving Washington, D.C. in Summer 2006, Bush taught at Elsie Whitlow Stokes Community Freedom Public Charter School for a year and a half.<9> She took a leave of absence from the Charter School teaching position to work at a shelter as part of an internship for UNICEF's Educational Policy Department in Latin America, specifically in Panama.<10><11> After her internship for UNICEF, she returned to her teaching position at the charter school in Washington, D.C., where she is again currently teaching.<12>

Writing
In 2007, Bush began marketing a book proposal with the assistance of Robert B. Barnett, a Washington attorney.<13> The title of the book is Ana's Story: A Journey of Hope and it chronicles her experiences working with UNICEF sponsored charities in Latin America, including visits to drought stricken Paraguay in 2006, while working as an intern for United Nations Children's Fund.<14><15><16><17> HarperCollins announced in March 2007 it would publish the book and it was released September 28, 2007, with an initial printing of 500,000 copies.<18> Her share of the profits will go to UNICEF; the remainder will go to the woman whose life is the basis of the book, assisting in the young woman's continuing education.<19[br />http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jenna_Bush

67. I've never seen Chelsea dry humping on the dance floor
Edited on Wed Jan-21-09 12:42 PM by lunatica
Falling down drunk, or sticking her tongue out at us. She's never been asked to leave a country either. So maybe I would have ms sanctimonious know it all.

70. wrong. there were pictures of Chelsea
drunk back in 2003. And Jenna Bush hardly stuck out her tongue at you- she stuck out her tongue at the press.

And you, Ms. puritan hypocrite, have never been drunk or goofed up when you were young?

Repulsive the hypocrisy around here.

75. You sound like a Puritan.
Falling down drunk is something MANY college aged people are guilty of. They had the misfortune of having papparrazzi follow them everywhere.

79. That's my point. They had secret service and the public eye on them
Are you claiming you would have gotten falling down drunk if your father was the President? You don't have to be a Puritan to have a modicum of manners in public

84. I don't know.
I would say I wouldn't do that, but we all make stupid judgments sometimes, right?

82. It's NOT a BIG DEAL. Many young people get drunk.
Frankly, I don't think it's too smart, but it appears to be a right of passage for a lot of young college kids.

62. The twins probably didn't write this.
And if it's such a nice gesture why was it an open letter and not just left for the Obama girls?

64. Probably the same reason
that Obama published a letter to his own daughter pre-inauguration in Parade Magazine.

71. That's what I was thinking.
My point is, this was not as sweet and gracious as some in this thread seem to believe. I don't see it as particularly sinister either, I just don't see any good reason to bemoan the remarks poking fun at the twins.

87. I think it was a nice gesture. This is all new for the Obama kids and
they just seemed to be helping them out. Why can't it just be that? Why does it have to be so ugly on here sometimes?
