As promised, we are having a username-change amnesty period which will last from now until January 31, 2009. That gives everyone ten days to decide whether to change your name.

Our last username-change amnesty period was four years ago, following the 2004 presidential campaign. We probably won't hold another one until 2012 or 2016, so this is your big chance.

If you don't have a good reason to change your username, we would strongly suggest that you not do so. Username-changes are confusing and a little disruptive, which is why we do them very rarely. Last time we did this, a few people changed their usernames on a whim, then regretted it later and asked to change back. DON'T MAKE THAT MISTAKE. I can't remember if we granted their requests last time, and I'm hoping I don't have to deal with it this time.

Individuals who choose to change their usernames will have an automated signature line appended to all of their posts, which tells the world your former DU identity. This will make it easier for everyone to know who all these new people with the strange usernames are. This signature will appear for one month.

But the mods loved her; I remember I once posted a scene from "The Day the Earth Stood Still" in response to a post, jokingly, and she almost got me banned. For that. With nothing else. And you can check how long I've been here. Any time she complained (and she did incessantly), the mods would take her orders, and delete posts that for others would be laughable. Very strange indeed.

She went on - and I am sure still posts - to Puma sites that seeth with hatred toward our president. Probably the weirdest experience I ever had at DU, and I've been here a long time.

I put untold effort into that journal for some damn reason, and would really rather not have to do it again. More to the point, it would be useful for people still weighing whether or not they want to make a name change to know that their DU Journal will evaporate if they make that change. No big deal for me personally; I can always do it again... eventually.

Edit: It was pointed out to me that the journal is still there under my old screenname, and intact, the only change being that the profile in the right margin now identifies me as Bossy Monkey. So if there's a way to relink the journal with my regular profile, I'd be very, very grateful.

You make the change, push the Save Changes button, and the same title comes back. Strangely though, you can change other things, such as text added to the right margin, eg my Hi! introductory text.

If we were hoping to change names so potential stalkery types would lose track of us, the way the database works has foiled that plan. Old posts of mine show my previous name as the thread starter, but when you click on the thread, my new name pops up - so the old and new are permanently linked even after our sig lines expire.

I'd be grateful for either solution - make old threads retain the old names, or transfer them in all views to the new name.
