Did you get a free sample of wet IAMS too?
If you buy IAMS, please think back.

Last month I purchased a 8lb bag of dry IAMS cat food. The bag came in a free pitcher with a Select Bites pouch sample. My cats were given the sample, only one cat ate a small amount of it. That same cat vomited and was lethargic for 2 days. As I got ready to phone our vet, he rubs up against me acting normal again and I hung up the phone.

I never put the two together until this afternoon when I saw the pitcher label with the free sample pictured on it.

The woman from IAMS told me they DON'T KNOW if the free sample product code could have come from a poisonous batch even though it's on THEIR LIST of recalled food, that ONLY 12 cats have died in the *entire* country and if my cat is acting OK now then he was going to be fine. Who else is getting this false information???

Our Vet wants to see him for blood work and to check for other related problems.

He is not happy about this either.

1. I'd save the receipts from the vet.

2. A DU post I read earlier referred to possible chronic kidney problems

so I would certainly agree with the vet.

...Damn! Wait, check that post that's like, one over, re: the FDA investigating the dry food. If it's not the dry food itself but the samples...! Geez, the FDA better put two and two together about that and home in quickly.

Edit: This one.

6. I've got a call into my grocery store
I'm going to make them check every bar code to see whether the poisoned food came into that store over the last month. I fed my dog one of these brands nearly every day. The numbers on the two cans in the cupboard are very close. The thing about the chronic disease has got me scared to death.

3. Definitely see the vet
and have the examination and blood work done. You'll want to know if your kitty (or even both of them) might have damage leading to chronic kidney disease.

The good news is that you can treat it. The bad news is that you'll have to treat it and your kitty's life will be shortened.

7. Hey I got that too!!!
But since my vet told me pouch food was like candy and the cans were better I didn't feed it to my cats. Thank goodness! Wow, I wonder if these samples were from the "new supplier" as a kind of taste test.:yoiks:

8. Glad you tossed it out!
I feel so guilty for giving him what we thought would be a treat. The vet only gave him and his brother a 50% chance of survival when we rescued them at 5wks of age. Trying to stay really positive here... He's alive and acts well for now, other's babies haven't been so lucky. We'll know more on Monday.

9. good luck
with your kitties. Keep us all posted. Don't feel guilty. Its not your fault. You could not have known. I feel very sad when I hear people feel like they did something wrong by simply opening a can of food and giving it to their pet.I think all of us with "furbabies" are in the same boat here.:grouphug:
