Actor Val Kilmer mulls bid for N.M. gov
Actor Val Kilmer is strongly considering a run for New Mexico governor in 2011 when Democratic Gov. Bill Richardson will be term-limited out of office.

He told The Hill at Monday’s Huffington Post party at the Newseum that he has been approached to run for the highest office of the state where he owns a ranch and has family roots.

“Actually, they’ve asked me to run for governor,” he said, not specifying who “they” are. “People seem to want me to.”

Speculation has swirled for months that Kilmer will run to succeed Richardson, and Kilmer said nothing that would have tamped down those expectations.

“I love my state and I love the people,” Kilmer said.

When asked by a reporter if he was giving a “strong maybe” for a run for governor, Kilmer agreed.

“That’s what it is,” he said.

The actor who succeeded Michael Keaton as the Caped Crusader could have a problem, however. He’s been a prominent support of Ralph Nader’s independent bid for the White House, and gave money to Nader, and not President Obama, in 2008.

Before you ask, no, this is not The Onion.

1. Well.
Maybe he can run the state better than he can act. He's entitled to consider. Let the state decide if they want him.

41. Michael Moore supported Nader at one time.
And so did Susan Sarandon, IIRC.

14. I think that's the basic description of a politician.
They all pretend to be someone voters would like. Even those who are good people in the first place still pretend to be someone else.

There are other qualifications, and I know nothing about whether he has them or not.

6. I love Val Kilmer, and, I think he is an excellent actor.
I also think he is a very good person, from all the interviews, biographies and other things I have heard and seen of him. I think he would be a good Governor. Maybe people that don't like his acting haven't seen all his movies. Watch a more recent one like Kiss kiss, bang bang, with Robert Downey,Jr.. That is one that didn't get a lot of coverage.

12. I think he can be a very good actor.
He also has a reputation in Hollywood of being something of a pain-in-the-ass prima donna. That perception hasn't served him well in his acting career but could help him as a leader.

Having said this, Kilmer has no leadership experience that I'm aware of - he is directing his first film as we speak (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1192878/).

21. Ex-Finnfan! I saw a biography where he talked about the
Pain-in-the-ass prima donna (hard to get along with was the phrase he used) perception. And it all sounded like a a lot of BS, but that is just my take on the matter. But, I don't know how being an actor has a draw back on serving your state or other people in any capacity.

Chris Knight: Don't eat that!
Chris' Girl at Party: Why?
Chris Knight: Don't you know that eating that stuff can give you very large breasts?

Chris Knight: Oh, my God! I'm too late!

47. As a Native New Mexican . . .
I say NO WAY IN HELL! Val represents the rich who moved into Santa Fe and kicked all the locals out because we could no longer afford to live there. If he loves the state and people so much, let him work for decent wages and affordable housing for all the displaced Native New Mexicans who are being pushed out. I'm sure the fact that my ancestors settled the place before 1609 (some even living in the vicinity long, long before that) and that I was born there doesn't matters in the least because folks like Val deserve my hometown since they are rich and I'm just a low paid teacher . . . BUT . . . Val does not represent New Mexico. His rich Hollywood click that ruined my old neighborhood may think he is great, but it is time for someone like Diane Denish who has been working hard in politics in New Mexico to be governor. She deserves it and he doesn't. Period. He is an actor. Diane more than paid her dues. She worked her tail off for Obama and New Mexico. It is her time to be our first woman governor. What has Val done for New Mexico? Nothing! And I voted for Nadar and have admired him for the past thirty years. But between a woman like Diane Denish and Val Kilmer there is no choice. Val looked great in leather pants in the Doors, but that doesn't make him worthy of being our governor. And it sure as hell doesn't give him the right to take away what Diane deserves.

I'm probably too tired and brain dead after a day of twelve year olds to write this, but boy does this just rub me the wrong way.
