Mo. neo-Nazis join `Adopt-A-Highway' trash cleanup

By MARGARET STAFFORD – 22 hours ago

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — A neo-Nazi group has joined the state's "Adopt-A-Highway" volunteer litter pickup program, taking advantage of a free speech court fight won four years ago by the Ku Klux Klan.

The Springfield unit of the National Socialist Movement has committed to cleaning up trash along a half-mile section of Highway 160 near the Springfield city limits.

Two signs noting the group's membership in the Adopt-A-Highway program went up in October but drew attention only recently when the group picked up litter as part of a gathering in Springfield.

The state says it had no way to reject the group's application. A 2005 U.S. Supreme Court ruling arising from a similar effort by the Ku Klux Klan says membership in the Adopt-A-Highway program can't be denied because of a group's political beliefs. At the time, the state could reject applications for the program from groups that denied membership based on race or had a history of violence.

1. The section the KKK got after that court case
Was then renamed the "Rosa Parks Memorial Highway" by the Missouri Legislature, showing even a stopped clock is right twice a day. :)

8. You would be wrong in that prediction
This is Springfield, SW Missouri, home to John Ashcroft and other fun little neo-Nazis. A very, very conservative area, home to the the World Headquarters of Assembly of God churches and Baptist Bible College(Falwell's alma mater) among many other very interesting institutions.

I lived there for a few years and it was hell on earth. There is a small, very small group of liberals and progressives in the area, but they either keep very much to themselves or move away rather quickly.

Just a few years back a young black man was found, hands tied behind his back, hanging by his neck from a radio tower. This young man, who had been dating a white girl, was declared to have committed suicide. That's Springfield for you.

3. Remember the scene in "Canadian Bacon" where the laid-off workers took their trash to Canada?
Here, you wouldn't even need a boat!

4. Doesn't make sense that they can't deny a group that denies
membership based on race. Presumably a Nazi group denies membership to nonwhite members.

6. It doesn't seem right that a group with lower equality standards than the government
should be allowed to participate in a government project.

9. Do the same thing they did when this happened with the Klan.
Name the highway in question after a civil rights leader. The KKK ended up being committed to picking up trash along the Rosa Parks Highway.

11. Let us know when they plan to do their cleaning. We can drive by and throw trash at them
Trash picking up trash. Imagine that.
