Sept. 2008 General strikes force South African president to step down. November 2008 THAILAND- general strikes fail. Strikers seize airports freezing economy forcing the government to step down. December 2008 Greece general strikes successful but fail to remove government, riots follow, president is clinging to power, refusing to leave. Strikes spread throughout all of Europe. January 2009 Iceland- after months of protest the Icelandic government has fallen PM resigns. 29 January 2009 8 unions and most of France held a one day general strike against government cuts and bailouts.
