I'm watching "NETWORK" on TCM right now and it still blows... |
|
my mind how freaking precise it is. When I first saw it, almost 30 years ago, I though it was good, but everything seemed so far-fetched and over the top. Not-any-fucking-more!! It is unsettling how on point those Howard Beal rants are and the Fay Dunaway character's blind ambition. It ought to be required view for every citizen. Before you get your driver's license you have to parallel park and watch this movie. DAMN!

2. I was just thinking about that movie. |

Another great watch is "zeitgeist" it goes into depth about such (and other) subjects....
I often wonder why more people didn't take "Network" as a serious prophecy of things to come. I also wonder why there haven't been to many more movies like this recently, but I guess the movie itself goes a long way in explaining why.

3. What I really have caught from Network to today's media |
|
is that ratings are NOT what matter most - it was that the network must deliver the propaganda message their the corporate owners want the public the hear - and not mess with anything that might upset their plans. The profit and loss from the news divisions are trivial compared to the benefits preventing the public from realizing what is happening.

Think of some of the crap that runs 24/7 on the teevee. The ratings must suck for some of that stuff. But when you own such humongous media venues, you can take losses so long as your agenda is being pushed through where it counts.

6. Only my absolute favorite movie of ALL TIME. |
|
I was amazed in 1976, I think it was, when it came out, and it still blows my mind today.
I thought all the lead actors deserved Oscars - Robert Duvall was freakin' INSPIRED. He became one of my alltime favorite actors with this film. And Faye Dunaway was utterly gobsmacking. Ned Beatty was great, too, as was William Holden. Hell, they were ALL fabulous. Not a clinker in the bunch. Even the bit part players were sheer perfection. I've seen a lot of those characters in the various jobs I've had in the news biz.
I can quote pages of dialogue from that film, can't count how many times I've watched it.
Blows my mind to this day, also. Predicted what we now know as Pox Noise and reality TV and corporate super-ownership and all the rest of it. Stunning!!! THE ALLTIME BEST, and most meaningful to this day. It was a cautionary tale alright, and nobody realized it.
