Favourite presidential couples?
Edited on Mon Feb-02-09 01:27 PM by galaxy21
There have been a few, and most couples, politics aside, seem to have interesting stories.

I know the Reagan's loved each other...almost to the point of worshipping one another. Heck, even their kids were resentful of how wrapped up in each other they were.

I'd say the Carter's as well. They've always been quite in love even after 60 something years together. And obviously the Obama's. I think it's cute when he calls her the love of his life.

anymore?

1. Harry and Bess Truman. He adored her.
My favorite story: Her mother always believed and said so that he wasn't good enough for her, that he'd never amount to anything. So when he became president, Bess made the old lady come and live with them in the White House.

Another: During some WH party, Harry cut loose with "That's a load of manure!" A society lady approached Bess and said, "Can't you do something about his language?" Bess answered, "You have any idea how long it took me to get him to say manure?"

2. Harry and Bess Truman
Harry was absolutely devoted to "The Boss".

Also:

John and Abigail Adams

(I used my time machine to obtain the photo)

The worst presidential couple in history was by far, Abraham and Mary Todd Lincoln.

6. I'm not sure who the worst is

The Bush's are possible, I suppose: You know I could possibly believe there was something between George and Laura once, but now? Laura's seems to be sticking it out because of some sense of duty, and George doesn't seem to care about anyone but himself. There doesn't seem to be one genuine emotion between them.

8. Well, that she saw his potential long before anyone else says
something about her smarts. He was aware of his abilities, but she encouraged him to go for it.

If you have Netflix, you might want to get Abraham and Mary Lincoln: A House Divided. It goes into some detail about a very complex marriage.

11. Laura's a lot craftier and ambitious than people think
I think the 'wallflower librarian' is probably an image she happily played up to. I'm sure she's probably a nice enough woman, but similar to Bush, who was acting like a pretend cowboy, she's been playing a character.

4. What about George W. and Condi?
Yeah, I know it's just rumors, but MoDo actually printed it in the NY Times about two years ago.

10. John and Abigail
I liked that the Reagans were so much in love. The Obamas appear to have an incredible relationship too.
