Breaking - SC Justice Ginsberg underwent surgery for pancreatic cancer in NY
No real news, but people are 'optimistic'.

1. Optimistic over pancreatic cancer?
:wow: Pancreatic cancer is a killer.

14. I heard on the radio that her pancreatic cancer was identified at a very early stage.
This is unusual b/c most pancreatic cancer is not detected until it's quite far along. The late detection is one of the reasons the survival rate is so low. Perhaps the reason for their optimism is due to the early detection. I heard it raised the predicted 5-year survival from 5% to between 10-30%. Not great, but I assume they'll take anything.

Pancreatic cancer is brutal. I have a friend whose mother died within a month of diagnosis. :-(

2. Aw, fuck.
That's a death sentence. And a horrible, horrible way to die. My grandfather died of pancreatic cancer.

Ginsberg is an outstanding person, and I wish her a speedy and comfortable recovery.

6. They got it early
The reason pancreatic cancer is a death sentence is because by the time people start showing symptoms, it's already far too late to do anything about it. This was found early, and by accident - she's got a shot.

10. She's already had cancer before though, right?
So wouldn't that likely mean this was metastasized? :(

12. We really don't know how early they found it.
And the tumor was already at 1 inch (that much we do know). Given her age and the fact that she's already been battling cancer, it's not hopeful. Obviously, her doctors are going to come out and say they're optimistic, but I'll be stunned if she survives more than six months.

16. 1 centimeter, not 1 inch
that's a big difference (1 inch - 2.54 centimeters).

4. Very few survive that cancer.
My step-father died in weeks. I cant imagine anyone being 'optimistic' about her chances. Its a horrible way to go. My heart goes out to her.

11. I hope she can recover (and on a selfish note, I want her to stay on the Supreme Court)
she is one of the best we have right now.

If she steps down for her health, I expect President Obama to nominate someone just as liberal as she is. None of this bi-partisan bullshit.

19. Oh, dear
That's a really bad type. My d-i-l lasted exactly 4 months from diagnosis to death. I wish her the best. Let's hope she's the exception.

I wonder if she's been suffering quietly waiting for a decent President to take office.
