I went to a cocktail party last night.
A recently widowed friend and neighbor threw it to thank all who had come to her aid in her grief.
I applaud her for that.
She is still grieving, but slowly coming to terms with it.
"It's what he would want." she told me.
Yes, it is.

The booze flowed and the eats were copious and delicious.
We were having a great time.
And then this one asshole started talking politics.

We live in a very red area and I don't talk politics at social gatherings.
But this jerk started on how misjudged/misquoted Rush Limbaugh had been about his wanting Obama to fail statement.

"That's not what he said. He said he said..."
That did it for me.
"Hey! Don't tell ME about what he "said he said". He said what he said. I've heard the tape and I've read the transcript. Barak Obama is the Republican's worst nightmare. If he is BARELY successful with the recovery plan you guys will be in for a long, cold, and very dark winter in politics. You'll be out of power for DECADES.
You guys are hoping, and doing everything you can, to ensure that he will fail. Screw the economy and screw America."

And then I found Miz t. and said "Fuck this. We're outa here."

And I'm STILL pissed.
:-(

1. Good for you
There's just so much one can take, and you hit your wall. Good for you for not turning the other cheek. Good for you for saying all that you did.

I just hope the hostess wasn't upset.

Why do those RushLovers always feel like they're entitled to spout their bullshit whenever and wherever they want? I should think an occasion such as the one you were attending would bring out better behavior in the guests.

Who am I kidding?

2. You should have let it go
for your friend's sake. Sometimes countering is counterproductive, and I doubt your friend cared the slightest bit one way or the other at that time.

15. She knows nothing about it.
We were in another room. Only 4 of us were involved in the conversation.
And it was a 'drop in' thing with no particular time frame as to how long you should stay.
No 'social feathers' were ruffled and we made our goodbyes to the hostess.
I called her the next day to tell how what a good time we had and how great the food was.
And it was!

5. But the free booze and copious, delicious eats??
All I have is bargain beer and leftovers, but at least no jagoffs to listen to. I stayed away from my girlfriends' last company party, in spite of the free food/booze for that exact reason.

6. What Tangerine LaBamba said. It has come to the point where we simply have to slap
these assholes down. Being polite is a no-win situation and the transgression was his for spouting that crap in a completely inappropriate situation in the first place. I know it must have been difficult to stand up to this shitheel in that setting but I'm glad you did.

I hope you send a note or call the hostess to offer your regrets, but no apology.

8. I might call and apologize to the hostess
Just for disrupting the party. And then thank her for giving the party. Then let it go at that.

9. Excellent
"Why do you hate America?" is the best response to these bastards. They did it to us for eight years, and now it's time to give it back to them in spades.

13. "Why do you hate America?" is far too mild. They have been calling us
literally unpatriotic and treasonous/traitors and calling for us to be shot for 8 years. Now they are calling us socialists.

It's time to call them traitors and unpatriotic to THEIR faces, and klansmen and nazis and fascists. TO THEIR FACES.

10. and then again
the hostess and the neighbor and the recently deceased may have been relieved that you shot down the asshole before the jerk got wound up and ruined the evening for everyone, pissing in the punchbowl, praising his holy *moron what's his name has-been.

decompress yourself. Put on your best progressive smile. You and Miz t. will still most likely be on the future guest list.

12. times like that you need to pull out an iPod or iPhone
with a video queued up of Rush saying exactly what he said. Stright from the pig's mouth:

14. I always offer a toast when that happens.
Overcome their negativity with some good old-fashioned jingoism. "My country right or wrong, praise the Lord and pass the ammunition!"

If I'm playing music, then it's time to break into a bit of Little Steven's "I Am A Patriot"

"And the river opens for the righteous, someday

I was walking with my brother
And he wondered what was on my mind
I said what I believe in my soul
It ain't what I see with my eyes
And we can't turn our backs this time

I am a patriot and I love my country
Because my country is all I know
I want to be with my family
With people who understand me
I got nowhere else to go
I am a patriot

And the river opens for the righteous, someday

I was talking with my sister
She looked so fine
I said baby what's on your mind
She said I want to run like the lion
Released from the cages
Released from the rages
Burning in my heart tonight

I am a patriot and I love my country
Because my country is all I know

And I ain't no communist, and I ain't no capitalist
And I ain't no socialist
and I sure ain't no imperialist
And I ain't no democrat
And I ain't no republican either
And I only know one party
and its name is freedom
I am a patriot

And the river opens for the righteous, someday"

We're all wound too tight with this politics stuff nowadays. Dummies have rights in our great nation and I'll defend their freedom to look stupid right up to the end.
