No more money to GM unless they bend to the will of the Obama administration |

Yes that may even mean pay cuts for the line workers. A job that pays 10% less is still better then no job at all. http://www.marketwatch.com/news/story/story.aspx?guid={D2483F8A-638A-4A2B-9EC2-428EE920D5E5}&siteid=rss http://www.suntimes.com/business/1432354,CST-NWS-GM15.article

If line workers' pay gets cut, there should be corresponding (sliding-scale type) cuts across the board, including executive compensation.

5. Most definitely. The Brass already agreed to pay cuts. It's the Union that bailed |

2. I agree taxpayer money should have stringent strings. |
|
However, the wording of your post might sound disturbing to many.

4. Stringent strings, "bend to the will" something, just different wording |

7. True, but one puts the onus on receipt of public money, |
|
the other on Obama making it sound he's dictatorial.

6. Agreed, but since it's MY money (or OUR money)... |
|
I'd add some requirements that the company do more to protect and create jobs in the U.S. If they take our money and build plants in China, that might help GM, but how does it help us?
Anyway, yes, there should be conditions on ALL the money, including the money for financial institutions.
:hi:
But, what do we do with the pensioners? Should GM continue to pay their health insurance benefits? Trick question, since I'm all for government-paid health system.

8. Maybe the government should take over the pensioners healthcare |
|
and open the plan up to us poor suckers who are circling the drain not being able to afford insurance. As for GM as a whole, I read they spent some of the last stimulus money in Brazil. That doesn't sit well with me and there needs to be a "spend in the USA" provision.

10. But it requires a change in our trade policies |
|
Everyone complains that the US auto companies aren't running their business well but then also complains when they do things like build plants in other countries. Most companies have shipped manufacturing to other countries...the US auto companies are really part of the little manufacturing done in this country. It's cheaper for companies to build products in low wage countries and then ship things back here. In a way, GM building plants in foreign countries is, based on our trade policies, exactly what we want. I do agree, we should make sure the money given to US auto companies benefits our country but that involves more than telling them to hire US workers.

9. I would only support cuts in workers' pay if exec's pay is cut *first*. |
