Hey, Country Firsters. When buying your North American based, North American built new car
Will you try to negotiate a lower price than the company has set or will you put the country first and support manufacturing more by paying the "sticker" price?

2. I'm not sure overpaying is putting country first . . .
After all, with what's left over from the (entirely traditional) bargaining process associated with buying a new car, I can go out to dinner, maybe buy a couch, get half my attic insulated, and so on -- thus helping *other* parts of the economy as well.

3. I just want a break on the sales tax.
Every year in Texas there is a tax free weekend for clothes and such, why not autos?

7. Did you itimize?
There's a standard sales tax deduction you can take, but for instance if you purchase a vehicle that's deductible and you can increase the standard deduction.

Also, I read something the other day that about the stimulus package and sales tax/registration taxes, etc, but I don't remember exactly what it was. (I'm not buying a car this year anyways, LOL)

10. Not necessarily
You can deduct sales tax or state income tax, not both.

11. Oh yes, sorry I forget I live in a state without an income tax

I believe the stimulus bill makes it deductible for all cars bought until Dec 31 nation wide then.

And the person I responded to also lives in Texas. :)

4. I'll take advantage of the offers that the company may have
If that means that I pay a little less, then great. As I see it if I buy an American made car and take advantage of special offers then we both win, I get a deal and they get a sale.

Why do you think that it's wrong to get a deal on a car?

8. Negotiate, of course
I will go for the cheapest price I can get. I assume they won't sell it without making some profit. Anything over that price is going into somebody's pocket. Might as well be mine as a stockholder. My main goal, other than getting a new car, is to create jobs.

12. I haven't said that people have to "buy American" or they are traitors.
or that companies with lower revenues shouldn't lay people off or cut back on things because it will hurt the economy and they should think about that first and not the future of their company.

Notice I directed the question to the Country Firsters.

17. Cars are different than organic arugula. You're expected to negotiate for the former.
Glad to be of help.
