Just like we needed to move on about Gillibrand, Rick Warren, or any one of the other things that we beat to death here. This too shall pass.

8. One man's issue is another man's nontroversy. |
|
After many sharp and crude arguments, I have to agree with you, those issues I mentioned were real, and belittling the concerns of those who brought them up was wrong. But these concerns are equally real to those who have brought them up, and therefore belittling their concerns is equally wrong, for it is just as insensitive as the so-called "STFU posts."

12. Were that a same-sex couple being filled with holes instead of a chimp... |
|
Edited on Fri Feb-20-09 12:30 PM by SidneyCarton
I seriously doubt we would be having this conversation.
Yes, the Connecticut Police shot a chimpanzee recently. Yet that Chimpanzee was used in the cartoon as the symbolic author of the Stimulus package. The titular author of the Stimulus is President Obama, an African American, and the likening of African Americans to primates, such as Chimpanzees has been a trope of racist literature for the last two centuries at least.
Much like with pornography, many here may not be able to define "dog-whistle" politics, but they know it when they see it.
(Edited to add the correct police force to the post)

15. When stereotypes are employed in political cartoons, the intention cannot be ignored |
|
... except by the ignorant. While I suppose there's something heartening about those who are actually ignorant of this particular stereotype, I have my doubts that all those feigning denial are ignorant of the slur.
Interesting.

25. oh tahitinut, there you go making people feel uncomfortable |
|
about the racism that is still present in american society. a lot of people don't like to hear about that or see it. someone posted pictures of that awful racist advertising that was the norm in america not that long ago, and some people were disturbed because they has to look at those images. anyway, racism is one of those non-issues that a lot of ______ americans don't like to discuss because it makes them feel uncomfortable.

I wonder if people would interpret the chimp cartoon any differently if the caption was:
"They'll have to find someone else to vote against the next stimulus bill"

17. I have to admit that at first, I didn't see it in the chimp cartoon. |
|
Edited on Fri Feb-20-09 12:37 PM by Marr
I skimmed it, and assumed the chimp *was* the stimulus bill, rather than the bill's author. IMHO, the words actually take it several steps past plain racism and make it more of a racist "joke" about assassination.
