Just curious. What percent of your income goes for insurance? |
|
Edited on Fri Feb-20-09 01:44 PM by leftyladyfrommo
I think about half of my income goes to insurance of one kind or another. And I have never used any of it. My medical has such a high deductible that I end up paying for the little bit of medical stuff that I can afford. Then there is house insurance, business liability insurance, car insurance. I bet I have paid thousands and thousands of dollars over the years. I would have been better off to have just paid for stuff myself and forget the insurance.
My bother has health insurance through work but he still pays 1200 a month for two people. He said that about half of his income goes to insurance.

2. That's the thing about insurance.. You are paying for something you hope you'll never HAVE to use. |
|
What you are really paying for is the peace of mind...

I easily spend over well $10,000 a year for homeoweners insurance, auto insurance, high deductible catastrophic medical coverage and property taxes.
I am mid to late 40s with no documented health problems. Of course it has been over a decade since I have seen a doctor for any reason.
I live in a small home that is over 60 years old. I installed a monitored alarm system and get the discount for that. The cost of monitoring exceeds the amount of the discount.
I have't received a traffic ticket or been involved in an accident or filed a homeowners insurance claim in many years. I qualify for all the discounts.
These costs exceed my combined annual expenditures for the following: cellphone, landline, cable tv including premium channels, cable internet, alarm monitoring, natural gas, electric, water, sewer, trash, susidized ambulance service, groceries, gasoline, and clothing.
If I exclude discretionary expenditures then the insurance costs easily represents over half of my annual expenditures.

That's health, dental, life, auto...I know I'm forgetting something.
None of the coverage is all that great, either.
