Any tax experts around? A form 8889 question. |
|
We have an HSA. We got the 1099-SA that stated what our distribution, which I put on line 14. Line 15 asks about unreimbursed qualified medical expenses. I read the instruction page for this but I'm unclear what this includes. Whenever I got a prescription or had a co-pay I used the debit card, which went into the distribution amount for line 14. What can I include in line 15? Could I put what I paid for premiums there or just medical expenses?

1. I don't believe you can put your premiums there, especially |
|
if they were from an employer plan where your premiums came out of your paycheck. Unreimbursed medical expenses would include anything not paid for out of your HSA.
That form is extremely confusing. I think my accountant may have screwed up last year on my HSA. There's nowhere on the 1040 to put the amounts I paid into my HSA from my paycheck, which should be non-taxable income. The taxable income on my W-2 only has my 401(k)contributions subtracted from my gross, not my HSA contributions. So, I'm trying to figure out where that amount comes off of my taxable income on my tax form and I can't find anything. It wasn't taken off on my 1040 last year either. It should be an above-the-line deduction. Very confusing.

2. You might consider PMing WCGreen... |
|
He is an accountant, and expert in this sort of thing...

I will keep that in mind if I don't get it figured out soon.

She's a current accountant. I think WCGreen might be retired, not sure though.
