A new grant awarded to Crow Canyon Archaeological Center will help continue funding for two long-term archaeological projects in Montezuma County.

The grant, which amounted to $137,586 from the State Historical Fund, will support two projects for 2009, said Crow Canyon spokesperson Joyce Alexander.

"The grant we received will fund archaeological research and education programs that go on at the Goodman Point Unit of Hovenweep National Monument and the writing of a final report on the Albert Porter Pueblo project," Alexander said.

The Goodman Point Unit covers approximately 142 acres in the county, and the project is in its fifth year of a six-year excavation, said Shirley Powell, Crow Canyon's grant writer.

Excavations at the Albert Porter Pueblo project started in 2001 and ended in 2004. An online publication will be released once final reports are finished.
