If she's doing well, why is he crying? Yes, seeing the patient after the procedure is traumatic, but hospital personnel prepares the family for what they will see. Could there be a hidden message?

and it does make one wistful.. I feel it too, sometimes.. We just had our 39th anniversary, and it starts to hit home, that each one could be the last.. You don't think that way at 5 years or 10 or even 20, but somewhere around 40 you realize that there are far fewer ahead, and most are in the past..

72. I too think that is it |
|
We are coming up on our 29th anniversary (and congrats to you two on your 39 years together) and it does make you think all sorts of things, like how different life will be without the other one here.
And same deal just on the old age thing - I don't ever recall either of us thinking a bit about growing old until recently. And if it is not me, it is dh bringing up the subject of how we have more time behind us than in front of us.
Part of it too is that the older you get, the more that people you know or know of start dying. I just saw an obit about someone I'd known in a hobby I did, dead and she was 10 years younger than me. In the course of reading the obit, I saw too that her mom had died (who was 10 years old then my dh - had last seen her less than 2 years ago). And while I knew them, the father had unexpectedly passed away - so virtually a whole family passed within an 8 year period. It takes a toll when you start focusing on such things once you hit a certain age.
Wistful is a perfect description.

5. My husband had this exact same surgery |
|
also done by Dr. Lawrie in 1999, except that he had two vavles replaced.
Nobobdy told me that when we saw him for the first time after surgery he would look like a corpse with his chest being pumped up and down by machines. His coloring was awful and he showed no signs of life. It was very upsetting. Fortunately when we saw him a few hours later, he looked completely different, which was a huge relief. I cried after I first saw him.
By the way he is doing great ten years later, although one of the repairs did not hold and had to be redone in 2000.

I wore my big girl panties that day. I waited in the waiting room for what seemed like forever. I had our families there to show the Dr that there would be someone to answer to if they screwed up, and I wiped the boogers out of my husband's nose and off of the tubing because he would not have wanted people to see him that way. I put on a big smiley face and I was positive. Not just for him but, for our child.

My father had a quadruple bypass in 1982, age 71. When he was in intensive care, he looked gray, like a slab of concrete. My sister ran out crying after seeing him. I waited to fall apart until I got home from the hospital.
When my father died in 2000, at the age of 88, he literally looked MUCH better when he was dead and laid out than he did back in 1982 in Intensive Care after the bypass. Even allowing for the undertaker's makeup and lighting.
Strange but true.
