4. I am hoping he chucks the UN entirely and starts over with a rational and appropriate structure

5. It's not up to anyone to 'chuck' the UN. Maybe majority rules. Who
wants to be kicked out, nevermind 'chucked'?

10. Given Obama's stature, he may be able to effect the desperately needed changes
I am for what the UN should be, I am against what it is today. I hold no hope of reform and think like the League of Nations, its time is past.

12. So maybe the UN can be utilized for everyone's benefit. We can do that if
we want to.

The UN used to be a good thing. I hope that might happen again. For the right reasons.

11. Gosh, that's almost Republican in its shortsightedness.
Especially the bit where you grant Obama the power to rule the world...or didn't you notice the "he chucks the UN entirely and starts over with a rational and appropriate structure" part of your remark?

15. How so. While I support what the UN should be, its not even close to that today. Radical change is
needed. Given his stature, he could well be the only one who make that happen.

6. Me too
The UN isn't very democratic at all. I don't think that every tinpot dictator and tyrant ought to be allowed a vote over issues that affect me, when they don't extend the same right of representation to their own people.

16. Not much love for the UN here either apparently
Just another Bush "legacy" that the rest of us will have to deal with for a long time to come. Hopefully, President Obama will restore its "relevance" to the appropriate level and work to strengthen the institution. Bush thumbed his nose at the rest of the world and basically took us out of the UN when he invaded Iraq despite overwhelming world disapproval, as well as the rejection of his calls for an invasion of Iraq by the UN (hint to Bush/wingnuts: The UN was established to PREVENT wars and encourage diplomacy NOT endorse them or give them legitimacy). Appointing Bolton (via a "recess appointment" no less), a notorious UN-hater who would've been ecstatic had the UN been destroyed (both figuratively AND literally), was another sharp poke in the eye to the institution. This isn't to say that there aren't reforms needed/concerns that need to be addressed (as with any institution) but it seemed to do a pretty good job of keeping the peace since WW2 and can still be an important (and very relevant part) of maintaining world order- if the US decides to rejoin the fold that is, which I believe we will under President Obama and (Susan) Rice

17. The fact that Susan Rice is our ambassador in the UN speaks volumes.
She is so smart, and initially I had hoped she'd be in the cabinet. But this admin had lots of brilliant ideas.

This is an institution to keep and grow, and I'm happy we have such a smart person to represent us.

7. The UN certainly needs work, but our opting out certainly hasn't helped.
