Check my math. Earmarks vs. Iraq |
|
I saw a thing saying there were like 9000 earmarks in the stimulus bill totaling over $9B. It was framed as something hugely irresponsible blah blah blah, but all I could think was, "Isn't that equal to like 3 weeks in Iraq?" So, am I right?
If so, the next asshole that says something to me about Obama's "spending" package and how it's full of pork, is going to get a question from me about how we've been spending that same amount every 3 weeks over the last 6 or so years in Iraq. On top of that, the pork wasn't added until AFTER congress got a hold of it anyway.

1. It's the Gingrich era all over again. |

Repugs are fiscally conservative only when they're not in charge.
My boss, who is a Repug, once asked me to read a chapter of Tom Coburn's book that he thought I'd find interesting. The long and short of what I read: once the Republicans got the majority in 1994, Gingrich suddenly lost all objections to pork and got in Coburn's face for objecting to it.
Same shit now. Truth be told, I hate pork, I wanted none in the bill, and I'm pissed at Schumer for claiming that we don't care about it, but you raise a good point - it's still a drop in the bucket. The party of fiscal conservatism spends like drunken Hollywood starlets when they have the reins, and bitch about everything we do when they don't.
