Arrest follows bomb explosion

Man who lost hand faces federal charge.

NAUVOO, Ill. -- Anthony J. Davis reportedly bragged about losing a hand when a pipe bomb he was making in February exploded.

But the bragging may have stopped after Nauvoo police officers arrested him Tuesday on a federal warrant. He is charged with possession of unregistered explosive devices. snip

Nauvoo Police Chief Don Faulkner said Davis lost his left hand in the explosion and may have suffered additional injuries.

The woman said Davis told other relatives he was making pipe bombs to use for fishing at a nearby pond. Davis reportedly told authorities the same thing.

2. Of course it's illegal
to use pipe bombs for fishing. Or anything else for that matter. Mr. Davis is not a terribly bright guy.

3. Using explosives for fishing has been illegal for years
and I can remember fishing season in the midwest sounding like a war zone, oafs tossing half a stick of dynamite out into a pond and then scooping up all the stunned and dead fish and leaving nothing for fishermen the next year.

Making pipe bombs is also illegal.

So this oaf deserved what he got, two ways.

4. Outside of Chicago, Detroit, and Indianapolis
I will never understand the midwest. I spent the three years of my life very confused at most things that were going on out there.

10. Midwest Proud
I live in Iowa, have my entire life, and am damn proud of it. So I am a Midwesterner, born, bred, and dead. I suppose if you were confused at things that go on out here, you may lack common sense, which most of us possess. We are hard working, down to earth people and a lot of us like to cast our lines into the water and catch some fish, for food and relaxation, without using pipe bombs. I guess if you don't like us rubes, then just stay away.

The midwest confuses me. I do my best to stay out of it.

27. That's a good thing
Because east coasters are confusing to us as well. How anyone can love crowds and confusion is beyond me, but then I'm just a rube from a small town in Iowa.

30. I was told I was an East Coast elitist all the time when I lived there

I like the outdoors as much as anyone, I was taught how to fish, camp and shoot a gun, I also like the city and museums, theatre, and the public parks with their public art. I love diversity and in a city you see more of that. People seemed to seperate more in the midwest than on the east coast. I also like the Ocean, and no matter how much you try to sell me on a lake being the same thing...it isn't.

17. Well, here in Minnesota, we catch our fish
the regular way, with hook and line. And then, mostly, we release them to be caught another day.

You might want to visit. It's a nice place.

20. Too damn many lakes in Minnesota!!
 A lake here and lake there a lake everywhere.

It seemed like a nice place when I visited up near Alexandria. I think it was about a 10 hour drive from southern Wisconsin.

24. Impossible to have too many lakes...
for where there are lakes, there are fish.

I can launch my boat in over 20 lakes within a half hour drive of my home in Saint Paul. Decisions, decisions...

8. Idiot.
Didn't he know that using a hand cranked radio type generator with a couple of wires running into the pond is just as effective, safer and less likely to get the attention of the authorities.

13. Uh...
Last I heard, you need a license to possess any explosive larger than one of those "Wild Cactus" fireworks some of us enjoy on July 4. Then there's the issue of actually trying to make an explosive at home, especially without a license. Just because you've got a copy of The Anarchist's Cookbook lying around at home doesn't mean you should building what the diagrams have laid out.

Classics:
"Hey ya'll, watch this!"
"Fannie, hold my beer."
"If those sissies on Fear Factor can do it, so can we."
"YEEEEEHAWWWW!"
"It ain't that far down. Here, hang onto my flip-flops."

New Nominations:
"Light this fuse and run like hell. No wait--you have to drop it first! Tony?! TONY!"

23. My grandfather used to buy dynamite at his local hardware store.
If you were building a driveway or a basement and there was a big rock in the way you could blow it up yourself.

I guess that's why you have to use home made pipe bombs for fishing now -- they don't sell dynamite at Home Depot.

:sarcasm: just in case. I'm surprised this wasn't already illegal. Aside from the obvious Darwin award potential, I would think that sending exploding devices into our waterways on a repeated basis would kind of mess with the local ecology. Just a hunch.
