Help with Groceries
though i am an atheist and apt to criticize what i consider to be the more negative effects of religion, i am also one to acknowledge when faith-based programs help the community, especially in times like these when people are in dire financial straits.

so when i read about this on another board, i thought it might be helpful to post it here, as it could make the difference between a DUer or friend or family member going hungry (or lacking in proper nutrition) and being able to make ends meet while eating right.

http://www.angelfoodministries.com/

- no applications
- no qualifications (financial or spiritual)
- they accept food stamps
- they have locations in 35 states
- half the price of retail

seems like a good program. we plan to try it out this month. has anyone else had any experience with them?

1. They just got raided by the FBI.
Apparently they're paying themselves six figure salaries that weren't being disclosed.

2. yes, i see that now.
just googled it. thanks for the heads up.

no doubt it gives me mixed feelings, as it strongly suggests corruption at the top.

5. That's a dirty shame
but the ministry itself is still a good one.

They get a lot of donations from manufacturers, so expect a lot of processed food. It's one hell of a lot better than hunger.

3. Excellent timing
Sorry.

Anyway, there are a bunch of threads on the first couple of pages, including a link to an old thread about them.

4. I got one of their $25 packages once.
Too much pre-packaged garbage food.

I can do better just shopping smart.

7. Ah - so it does *not* deliver precisely what it advertises?

9. No, they did.
I just didn't like the stuff.

What exactly did I say to confuse you? Are you easily confused?

8. A lot of people like AFM and are happy with the package and price.
I don't eat much in the way of preprocessed foods, so it never appealed to me.

And now there's this new fiscal monkey business. Sigh.

I buy staple items in bulk and cook mostly from scratch, so I get by pretty cheap, and so could many people by doing the same. Perhaps the most "christian" thing to do these days is teach people how to shop for food wisely and cook from scratch.

Oh, I know. I said a BAD THING and now I'm gonna get flamed.

10. It is a good program...it fed us when my husband got hurt and couldn't work...
If the assholes that corrupted the program are driven out, maybe it'll get it's credibility back. They have fed a hell of a lot of people and I hate to imagine those that would do without should this organization die.

BTW, I'm an atheist, too.
