“The Move”- A small excerpt from a larger story of a tiny tale of epic horror. Part Two. |
|
The house was a huge and ancient monster; gothic to an extent, a definite castle/keep/stronghold motif to it, with mysterious high tower like rooms and strange balconies that seemed to connect to no particular room. Surely it had seen many renovations in its history. The cracking, dark brown exterior was in dire need of new paint, but added a nice “Addams Family” vibe to the place, and if you know me, that was part of the attraction of moving there. Sadly we have been promised a new coat this coming spring.
The interior was actually more elegant, with beautiful hard wood floors throughout and even the “Evil Staircase” itself was a gorgeous, if sinister, construct with wide uninterrupted banisters, and my inner child instantly grew jealous that I had never had the chance to hurl myself down them in younger days. A feat I wouldn’t dream of attempting today or at least my wife won’t let me attempt until I obtain better life insurance.
The move from the van to the main lobby of the house was an easy enough task for Nania and Janus. The house had a massive front portal with two sets of double wooden and glass doors that swung open wide and required no barrier to stay that way. Fortunately the street isn’t busy so curbside parking right in front of the place was easy.
Perilous stairway notwithstanding, we did luck out in finding a place with such an accommodating entry way; and there was plenty of room to assemble all our belongings inside before any further carrying needed to take place. A smartly built house for getting things in and out and although split up into many apartments like many of the older large houses around here it was wise to design the apartment structure with this essential element intact. We’ve lived in similar places where the landlord didn’t have such regard for their potential tenants. Generally these badly partitioned boxes are a moving nightmare. I vaguely recall the madness of removing several large windows from our previous lodgings because the anteroom to our door wasn’t large enough to fit a couch through.
But I digress, and I don’t wish to diminish in any way the struggle that my mighty Queen and her loyal nephew endured that day; so, on with the tale then.
The chess pieces were assembled on the landing, the game afoot, and the wind from the closing doors made a sound like a whisper as it flew up the stairs
“Your move”
Janus audibly scoffed at the challenge before them. Queen Nania sized up the situation, regaining her strength and wits.
TO BE CONTINUED Sorry kids, guess it's a three parter at this point. -S
