What Bush's veto means... |
|
Bush announced he's going to veto the $122 billion supplemental spending bill for the war in Iraq, because it has a clause requiring Bush to bring combat troops home from Iraq by September 2008. What's interesting isn't that Bush is going to veto this bill, but that he was put in the position of having to veto this bill.
Mitch McConnell and the other Republicans in the Senate could have easily filibustered this bill. An amendment to remove the withdrawal deadline from the bill only failed by 48-50. If McConnell wanted, he could have buried this bill, but he chose not to. What does this mean? It means that Capitol Hill Republicans are finally sick and tired of taking heat for all of the White House fuckups. They're tired of being the water carriers. Because of this war, because of Bush's and Cheney's corruption and incompetence, the Capitol Hill Republicans paid a heavy price last November - they're now the minority party, and several of their members are in prison or facing prison. They've finally had enough, and they're now throwing Bush under the bus. They didn't want to be stuck choosing between setting a deadline for withdrawal or defunding the war, so they chose to dump that problem on Bush.
Bush no longer can count on the Congressional Republicans to be his sycophants. Expect the political backbiting to get uglier soon...

1. McConnell sent a major message to Bush |
|
Mind you - all of the republicans except Hagel & Smith voted against it. But by not filibustering, the 21 repukes up for re-election in 2008 won't get slammed as hard for not bringing home the troops
