A huge sandstorm engulfs the Saudi capital of Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, Tuesday, March 10, 2009. The storm, which was still raging hours after it started, disrupted flights at the city's King Khalid International airport, with weather authorities announcing that visibility would drop to zero, and warning residents to take precautionary measures.

1. I lived there (Riyadh) for 4 years - these sandstorms can be unbelievable
I had a friend with a Maserati who got caught in one between Riyadh and Dhahran. It stripped the chrome off his front bumper.

(No Willie Nelson jokes - please)

3. I was told about them by soldiers in the first gulf war
they said that they were basically shut down in February and into March

2. Been there, done that. And I didn't even have a fancy-schmancy brick-and-mortar building
to wait it out in. Just a flimsy German fest tent.

5. I don't care how awesome people think Chuck Norris is; he's no match for an M1A1 Abrams tank
and four well-trained American soldiers...

And the sandstorm? Lasted all of ninety minutes. No sweat...

6. There's no reason why flights should be delayed. They have radar!
:sarcasm:

7. Looks like a typical Arizona haboob during our Monsoon season
Happens every summer here. Makes a real mess in the pool.

haboob (dust storm) rolls in from the Gila River Indian reservation northward towards the south side of South Mountain in Phoenix, Arizona.

Come on down in late July or August.
