How has everyone's heating bills been this winter...
I usually see a thread but I haven't seen one lately. Mine have been out of sight, the gas for cars is up so what are they up to...

16. Lucky you
Mine isn't. I rent a 2 story 3 bedroom house. It was running about $400 a month for natural gas heat. Probably why most private rentals here do not include utilities. My thermostat is set at 62 degrees.

January may have set records for warm temps, but February and March have made up for it with brutal cold.

3. We've barely had winter in Los Angeles
Two nights of freezing (lost a few potted plants), but I only had the heater on for maybe 10 hours total all winter. Don't ask about the water though! We may be on rationing very soon.

15. We installed a new finance and air conditioner in mid June 2006.
Our bills have consistently been significantly lower since then, until February and March (for January and February). Those bills were actually higher than last years, but it was significantly colder than last year, and we bumped the thermostat about 3 degrees over last year, thinking the increased efficiency would make up for it.

6. New Hampshire
a new, well insulated house but still about $2000 for the year. Better than my old house outside of Boston which probably ran $4000 a year.

7. Our winter was really mild
so our winter was cheap as far as heating goes.

When Michigan is in the tropics, it'll be cheaper yet. *sigh*

8. Upstate New York, least I've ever paid for heat this winter, in 12 years,
in spite of high prices. It was warm for much of November/December/some of January- almost 1/3 of my heating bill usually. I use oil but my goal is to go at least 1/2 biodiesel next season.

10. Maryland had a few weeks of cold weather
so our heating bills were around $200 to $250. We use natural gas for heat, so it wasn't too bad. But we are going to be screwed big time come June. Electricity bills are going up an average of 76%. Thank you former governor Erhlich. We live really close to the Bay so the 3 h's of summer, hazy, hot and HUMID are constantly with us. A/C is about the only thing that keeps life liveable in the summer. But with bills going up like that, the A/C trip temp is going to be set much higher than in past years. My Siberian Husky is not going to be happy, however the greyhounds and whippets will be fine with that.

11. We had an unusually warm winter overall, but several severely
cold, short snaps and my bill is lower than expected (the cold snaps were due to Siberian, not Canadian down drafts, they were frigging cold for here).

We did just get an approval for the Electric company to raise their rates, so, summer's gonna be a different story, 2nd floor condo and heat rises!).

Perhaps, everyone should look to their electric bill this year, for the increases!

14. We're on a level pay plan...so about $120 a month...but...
we used the wood stove all winter for heat. When we buy a new heater for next winter, the bill will be closer to $200 no doubt. :(

17. I'm in Boston at a new place ...
I keep to cool 63-65 degrees and I had a gas bill a little over $100 one month. It's pretty much over and that's the only thing I have that's gas in my place, so I'll get $10 gas bill in the summer to keep the line open.

Usually 50-65 degrees for highs. Lows in the 30s and 40s. It's been in the 70s and 80s for the past several days.

24. More expensive
Possibly the total out-of-pocket is less due to overall warm temperature but the cost of natural gas is higher.

You've ain't seen nothin' yet....

25. Not as bad as I expected this year, especially for Michigan

My combined heating and gas bill topped out at $410 after the cold snap, but that was the high.

I have an old, poorly insulated house, so they are never good, but I was expecting worse.

I am slowly but surely doing what I can to my house to make it more energy efficient, when I can afford it.

$171 combined gas and electric. Not too bad for a 1200 sq ft house I figure. DTE's rates are still too high, though.

26. Not terrible...
I got married & moved in with my wife this year...in past years, it's been about 1000-1200 gallons of oil, but with me there, we did some SERIOUS preparation for the winter (we live in rural Maine).

We plastic'ed all around the house, and insulated our water well (the water had been known to freeze during February during a couple of winters). We kept the thermostat between 62 & 65, and wore sweaters (yes, Jimmy Carter was onto something!!!!).

Instead of the 1000-1200 gallons, we've only used 550 gallons (and still have a half a tank!!!). So never underestimate good weather preparation, and keeping the thermostat down a bit...

And...even though it was HORRIBLY cold for a couple of months, no frozen water :)
