Kilroy, Obama Announce Funds to Help Weatherize Homes, Creates Jobs
March 12, 2009 9:30 AM

Congresswoman Mary Jo Kilroy helps IMPACT Community Action staff weatherize a home in Columbus by installing insulation in the sidewalls of a home. Kilroy announced today that more than $266 million from the recovery package will be directed to Ohio to save families money, conserve energy and create jobs in her district.

WASHINGTON - Congresswoman Mary Jo Kilroy and President Barack Obama today announced that Ohio will receive more than $266 million to weatherize homes, save energy and create jobs. On Saturday, Kilroy went “on the job” with IMPACT Community Action to weatherize a Columbus home. IMPACT expects to create 30-40 jobs because of the recovery plan.

“Saving money, creating jobs and conserving energy are just three of the benefits that families in central Ohio are beginning to receive from the recovery plan for America,” Kilroy said. “Money directed towards weatherizing homes is a wise investment because it puts people to work ensuring families can keep energy costs down and use less of it. I saw firsthand this weekend how important this program is for homeowners and for reaching energy independence.”

The Home Weatherization Assistance Program (HWAP) was designed to reduce the energy consumption of Ohio’s low-income households, making utility bills more affordable by improving energy-efficiency for income-eligible households. The recovery plan invested a landmark $5 billion for this program. The free services may include attic, wall and basement insulation, blower-door testing for air leakages and heating system repairs or replacements.

On Saturday, Kilroy went on the job with IMPACT Community Action to the home of Delyla Anderson in Columbus. Anderson spent more than $300 per month on her gas bill and will save over $90 now that her home has been weatherized. Kilroy helped blow insulation into the sidewalls of the home and inspected the work IMPACT has done to clean Anderson’s furnace and insulate her attic.

President Obama and Kilroy also announced more than $96 million will be released for the State Energy Program that provides energy assistance for homeowners that meet certain eligibility.
