So let's get this straight, the federal government absolutely had to run to the rescue of AIG Inc. with a nearly $200-billion bailout to save the United States and global economies from utter ruin?
And now it's OK that $165 million in bonuses were paid to about 400 AIG employees -- including many of the same goofballs who cooked up garbage derivatives that sent AIG begging to the government? And those same toxins helped toss nearly every 401(k) into an acid bath in the process?
Good times or bad, it is generally true that the right three letters can guarantee that you'll get paid way more than most people deserve in this country. Say like, CEO, NBA, and NFL. It's easy any day to have a little paycheck envy when you hear about a seven- or eight-figure payout.
But let's make this clear. We're not living with everyday outrage here during this 15-month-long and no-end-in-sight recession.
No one at AIG deserves any bonus. Not a dime. There is nothing to debate.
Every day, we're talking about workers being forced to take 5% or 10% pay cuts in many industries. Every day, we're hearing parents tell their kids, sorry, we cannot afford to let you play in the band this year or go to camp because well, mom isn't working any more.
