Report: Troubled Texas students forced to fight in cage

DALLAS (AP) — Workers at a Texas high school staged cage fights among troubled students, making them settle their differences with bare-knuckled brawls in a steel utility cage inside a boys locker room, school district documents show.

The principal and other employees at South Oak Cliff High "knew of the practice, allowed it to go on for a time, and failed to report it," according to a 2008 report from the Dallas school district's Office of Professional Responsibility. The documents were obtained by The Dallas Morning News for a story in its Thursday editions.

The report describes two instances of cage fighting between 2003 and 2005.

Dallas schools Superintendent Michael Hinojosa confirmed that there were "some things that happened inside of a cage" and called the fights "unacceptable."

No criminal charges have been filed in the case.

1. "No criminal charges have been filed in the case."
Good thing they weren't staging fights between poultry.
That is illegal.

2. Cage fighting was reported to have occurred in a Texas state school
in Corpus Christi recently, too:

State officials ordered the immediate suspension of admissions to Corpus Christi State School on Tuesday after a police investigation revealed at least 11 employees had forced profoundly mentally-disabled men to engage in video “fight club”-like battles at the facility.

In the fights, filmed with a camera phone, male residents can be seen pushing, shoving and punching one another as employees encouraged them to continue. A mentally-disabled man in one scene can be seen raising his hands in victory after winning, said Corpus Christi Police Capt. Tim Wilson.

Wilson said the cell phone, turned in March 3 to an off-duty officer, contained images dating back to 2007.

“It appears that the workers were using clients as some sort of fight club,” said Wilson, whose department is part of a joint investigation with the Texas Health and Human Services Office of Inspector General. “I’ve been in police work for 30 years, and I’ve never seen something like this. These workers are exploiting them for their own entertainment.” SNIP
